36 Hours in San Francisco- What to do?
Hi everyone-
My husband and I have from around 10am on a Saturday morning till 10pm on Sunday night in early March to see some of San Francisco. We have been there once before, but only for a day. We could easily spend a week, but we dont have the time! Well just have to make the best of our whirlwind tour. We are staying on Nob Hill, but other than that, we schedule is open. What's your dream itinerary? Any place we should NOT miss? What about the most overrated thing to skip? Thanks for all of your suggestions!

I live in the Bay Area. For your limited time you may want to start with a city Grayline tour. Best way to see most of the sights with limited hassle.
Another interesting tour is Alcatraz. Be sure to call and have tickets before you arrive as this can be sold out. This also gets you on to the Bay to enjoy the city from the water.
Hard to tell you what "not to miss" as my opinion would disagree with other posters. Just pick out what you are interested in and go for that area...i.e. museums, plays, restaurants, etc.

Do the famous (underrated) 49-mile-drive. Take your time and stop the car often. You'll see everything. End up with a trip to alcatraz later Sunday afternoon or Saturday morning before you take the drive. This is "if" you have a car.
The most overrated thing?... hmm.. Pier 39. Bunches of shops, and not much else. Do dress warmly and expect sunshine. You probably won't have fog in March. Enjoy!

Be sure to get a view of the city from the Bay. Taking a ferry to Sausalito or Tiburon for lunch is worth the time spent. Personally, I would avoid Fisherman's wharf. I would take the California St. cable car ride (skip the lines of the more popular route) from Embarcadero to the end, turn around and on the return trip get off at Grant Street. Walk through China Town, back around through North Beach, have a drink at the Equinox Room at the Hyatt Regency for a great rotating view.
Can you ride bikes? If so, rent bikes, ride along the Embarcadero through the wharf along the Marina Green and over the GG bridge. Come back to the City by ferry.

A great show that would be fun for you and your husband: Beach Blanket Babylon. It's not far from you hotel, but do take a taxi even if you have a car. The parking situation is terrible. Its a lot of fun. check it out on the web. I don't have the web page on hand, but it's easy to find with a search. ..sold out every night. (purchase in advance by phone)

I had about the same amount of time a few years ago -- this is what we did. On Saturday we did a lot of walking around downtown, Nob Hill, North Beach etc. during the day and had lunch in Chinatown. Have lunch at the House of Nanking -- it's not the nicest restaurant in terms of atmosphere but the food and prices are great. Early evening we took the cable car to Fisherman's Wharf walked around and had dinner there. On Sunday we rented a car and did the 49 mile tour as suggested above and ate lunch and dinner along the way. It's a quick way to see a lot of the sites, but you don't have a lot of time to spend in any one place. We then drove to the airport for a flight home. I have since been back and had much more time to spend doing the sights at leisure -- and feel the way we spent our time that weekend was a good use of our time. No matter how much time you have, San Francisco is a great place to visit. Enjoy!
