3 nights in Flagstaff, what to do?

We will be 3 nights in Flagstaff, AZ on Labor Day weekend. Does not sound like a good weekend to go to Grand Canyon ( we have been 3 times), the crowds, etc.

We are coming from the Navajo res. and seeing everything North of the city.

We thought we would see the renewed downtown area, go to Walnut Canyon another day, and then Slide Rock SP another on our way to Sedona.

What would you change or add?

We are staying at Little America (hopefully quiet) Hotel and the rates are too expensive for Las Vegas, our next stop after the holiday weekend.

We like to look at scenery & history more than shops.

Walnut Canyon is nice, but you can also go to Wupatki National Monument and Sunset Crater to see some interesting ruins and an cool little volcano. Meteor Crater is just down the road apiece too.

I don't know if you would have already visited Canyon de Chelly whilst you were on the Navajo Reservation, but if you have not, a day trip to it is worth it (leave very early). Also, Petrified Forest/Painted Desert is just east on I40, as is the Meteor Crater.

I love Flagstaff! I'd definitely visit Wupatki while you're there. Also, the Museum of Northern AZ in Flagstaff is wonderful, although I don't know if they'll be open on Labor Day weekend. The drive through Oak Creek Canyon between Flagstaff and Sedona is spectacular. You could drive up to Snow Bowl in Flagstaff and do the ski lift ride up to the top of the mountain.
Flagstaff's downtown is delightful. There may be entertainment in Heritage Sqaure while you're there.

We stayed at little america last year and it was very nice (and pretty quiet). I would second ALF suggestions. I loved Wupatki, we also visited sunset and meteor crater (interesting if youhave never seen it). We also drove up to the observatory at night and saw the most beautiful sky thru their giant telescope. And defintely, if you haven't visited petrified forest etc, make sure to see that. I really love the flagstaff area. have fun.
