I am leaving for San Francisco in 36 hours (from London) I have been told about two restaurants, Issy's for steaks and Scomma's (?) for fish. Can anyone tell me anything about either of these? Thank you.

I have heard scommas is good. What are you really
looking for? For seafood I would go to McCormack and Kuletos down on Fisherman's Wharf - they print
a new menu every day and overlook Alcatraz. Entrees run about $12-25.

For mixed continental food I would go to Boulevard. My favorite place in SF is called Cypress Club- beware it is expensive - but wild. The food is New american/french with lots of neat game and veggies. The decor is like eating in a Salvador Dali painting. Save it for a special night.

Bix is a great Martini bar within walking distance of Cypress Club. For Italian, see if you can get in to Rose Pistola in little Italy- dubbed the best new restaurant in town. Prices are pretty inexpensive, nice atmosphere, neat people at the bar. Good luck!

San Francisco is justifiably well known for its resturants. I have yet to have a bad meal in SF. In addition to the usual tourist areas such as Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39. I really like Noe Valley, where you can find a very good meal cheaply. North Beach is where you can find italian food;Columbus Street is the main street. Parking can be a problem. Like Asian? Try Clement Street. Parking is much better. I had Burmese food there-excellent! Remember, you are going to pay much more in places like Scomma's. Try the little, out-of-the -way places. Virtually all resturants post a menu outside the door. The entire bay area offers great food. Sausalito just across the Golden Gate Bridge is a lot of fun, with good seafood resturants. Try a ferry ride to and from Sausalito. Berkeley has Spanger's, a famous seafood place just off Interstate 80, across the Bay Bridge.

Try to stay out of areas such as downtown Oakland, the Inner Mission in SF and the Fillmore district in SF after dark; they are not safe.

You are going to SF the best time of the year; late summer and early fall. Enjoy your trip!

While you are at it, can anyone comment on either MASA's at 648 Bush St. or FLUER DE LYS at 777 Sutter. Thanks.

Dave - Masa's and Fleur de Lys are both in the top 10 of SF eateries. Masa's is decorated with dark wood and rich brocade fabrics -- sort of feels like an elegant gentlemen's club. Fleur de Lys is hands-down the most romantic dining room in SF. The food at both is superb, and the price reflects it.

Scomma's is good. For more seafood, try Sam's Grill in the Financial District or the Waterfront on the Wharf. For good Italian, there's Donatello and Buca Giovani.
