We recently did 2 islands and spend one full day just on travel. I wouldn't do that again, especially if you only have 8 days.

14 days: 6 days on each island and two days to travel there and back. but this is more idealistic than realistic, at least for me......
i wouldn't island hop. IMO there is just too much to see and do on each one of these islands not to devote at least a week per island....

We spent 7 nights on Maui and 3 nights on Lanai; it was perfect! The ferry to Lanai took less than an hour. On Lanai, we stayed at the Manele Bay Resort; an awesome hotel with an incredible beach and close to the ferry dock. Spent one day touring the island and two days relaxing on the beach. Other than Lanai, wouldn't attempt trying to see Maui & any other island in 8 days.

I would say go to 2 islands if that is what you really want to do. While I admit that I always cram in too much on my vacations, 8 days is ample time. I spent 9 days in Hawaii and saw Kauai, Maui and Oahu. Are you connecting in Honolulu? You can relax on Maui for 6 days and fly to Oahu for the last 2 days. It is worth it to see Pearl Harbor and Hanauma Bay.

My wife and I went to Hawaii in the early 90's. We stayed 3 nights each on Oahu, Maui, & Kauai. We like to see as much as possible and we are not beach bums. We only spent a couple of hours on the beach, but quite a bit of time at the hotel pools after a day of sightseeing. If I had to do it all over again, I would skip Oahu and split the time up equally between Maui and Kauai. They are both beautiful, but quite different. Four days on each island would give you a chance to see most of each island. If however, you want to spend most of your time on the beach, then stick to one island. Have fun!

We did 5 days Maui and 5 days Honolulu. I would have liked the idea of 14 days, but 10 was fine. We sightseed and relaxed on the beach.

Aloha girl,
If you don't plan on revisiting Hawaii soon, I'd vote for 2 islands. As mentioned above ferries run to the islands of Lanai and Molokai from Maui allowing $) day trips to get a sample of what Hawaii has to offer

With that many days I would do only one island.

We just did Maui & Kauai in 8 days and it was great. Plenty of sightseeing & plenty of laying on the beach. It's very doable, and we're planning on doing Oahu & Big Island in 9 months!!!

We went to Maui for 7 days with a day trip to Oahu to see Pearl Harbor. We would have liked to have stayed on Oahu for longer than a few hours, but we did get to see everything we wanted.

If we could do it over, we would have tried to see more Islands, even for a few hours or a whole day, than spending all our time on Maui.
