My husband and I are going to a wedding in San Diego in February. We will have 2 days for sightseeing while we are there. Neither of us has been to San Diego before and we are looking for some advice as to how to make the most of our 2 days.

We are thinking of either the zoo or Seaworld, touring the Gaslamp dist, Coronado Island, and Old Town.

We are late 20s, early 30s, interested in nightlife, the history and culture of the area, the beach, and so on.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you have it covered quite well. There is also a place close to the gaslamp dist. called Seaport Village. A nice place to visit, walk around,have lunch and shop. Another great place for much of the same, is a trip to La Jolla. Located on the beach, visit the Sea Wall, although Feb. not sure what you will see that time of year.La Jolla is a lovely town. Have a drink at the Marine Room in La Jolla. This Sits right on the beach. Also a Margarita in Old town is a must. Have fun.

Thanks xxx. What about transportation in San Diego? Will we need to rent a car or will public transportation and cabs be suficient? We are staying downtown.

We were in SD a few whiles ago for a wedding and stayed at the Embassy Suites near Seaport Village. We did not have a car so here's what we did:

Took the trolly to Old Town and had a great time looking around and then stopped to eat at what we determined was quite a popular place. We had such fun people-watching that the margaritas got the better of us! Took the trolly back to the hotel and changed for dinner. Walked to Gaslamp District and ate at a place with sidewalk seating. Saw all the brides-to-be partying away in their ripped up veils. Guess it's the thing to do. The restaurant was just across from Croce's.

We also checked out Horton Plaza and lots of other shopping within walking distance.

The rail was very easy and convenient for us.

If you like nightlife, Gaslamp Quarter should be on your list. It's basically adjacent to Downtown San Diego. Mobs of people (many tourists), lots of fancy restaurants and clubs. Suzie's suggestion is great - if you are staying near the trolley, you won't necessarily need a car with two days there, though that limits your travels obviously.

Without a car, perhaps you can take a ferry from Seaport Village to Coronado Island (never done the ferry - I've always driven). Great beaches (how to get there from the ferry without a car? taxi? anyone?); make your way to the Hotel del Coronado, a classic old hotel and major landmark. Kind of a ritzy area.

If you do have a car, check out Pacific Beach. It's more of a working-class twenty-something hangout than, say, La Jolla to the north - lots of bars and a nice beach also. It's a few miles from downtown SD, though. As with most of Southern California, renting a car makes things much easier.
