Thank you sunbum! I will make note of those recommendations. I have heard Del Mar is beautiful. My 1 night in San Diego is actually my last night in California of a 5 night stay. (Flying in and out of San Diego). I will be driving into Lajolla from Laguna Niguel. I will try to drive the coast into DelMar on my way to La Jolla and maybe stop for a short break to take pictures. I hope the weather cooperates for me.
Thanks,
Annika

Hi annikany..
I think for the price of $189 to stay in LJ during the summer is the reason this Hotel is one of the fav's.. it is on a busy corner but for 1 night and the views are stunning and it is a short 5 minute walk to a gorgeous beach and they have free shuttle to the downtown which is a 1.5 miles from the downtown action of LJ..Do the shuttle into LJ so you don't have to hassle with parking which is a nightmare in the summer!!!
I think you will have a great time!
Hi Sandybrit..
I would try to get as high as possible because of the sweeping views..being really nice to the front desk, usually seems to work for me but if not the price is right for staying in a very pricey location..
Another wonderful place off/on season and right in downtown LJ is the;
thegrandecolonial.com
There is a BW in downtown LJ but it can be around $200-$600 (which is crazy,Expedia has it for $600 a night for the end of June..double what La Valencia is..go figure) depends on the season..
I am all about the best bang for the buck especially when it comes to going somewhere where it is high season and you are at the mercy of the Hoteliers to double and triple their normal rates..so $189 for an ocean view 2-3 blocks from one of the most gorgeous beaches in the country is a bargain for the summer in LJ!
I think you would have a blast Sandybrit..wishing you all the best!
There is a Starbucks next to the Hotel LJ and Elario's at the top of the Hotel is good for a drink and app's before you head out for dinner and watch the sunset..
Brockton Villa is delicous that sunbum1944 says for breakfast and I would do George's for lunch at the top terrace and walk around the area and see the seals and the beautiful coastline..
Have a blast annikany and let us know how your trip was!

Thanks Tahititams!
I'm sure I will enjoy the Hotel Lajolla. Do you know what attire would be appropriate for Elario's? It looks a little upscale and I don't want to walk in under dressed. Would a casual skirt or summer dress be fine?
Brockton Villa sounds perfect for breakfast. The description reminds me of The Cottage Restaurant in Laguna Beach. Do you have an address for me? I'll do a map quest and locate now.
Thanks you guys! You are the best!
Annika

I will make out a trip report when I return. Promise

Hi annikany..
LJ is so SO. CAL and a summer dress will be perfect!
If you want to take a shuttle to Brockton Villa in the morning and then walk around the cove and if you walk past the cove(up the hill) to the Shell Shop 1) you can go down the stairs to the ocean/sea cave and it is really cool to see and then there is a wonderful path that only the locals really know about and it is next to the Shell Shop that follows a natural trail with benches and it is gorgeous and you can get a mile work-out in to your Hotel and it follows the beach and you have incredible views of the coast up to Del Mar..You will go by the old Christina Onnassis home off on Spindrift drive and stay on the street all the way down to the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club..Private at the Club but you can wander down to the Marine Room Restaurant just to check out the floor to ceiling windows and the waves splash literally on the windows..view is unbelievable! ljbtc.com
Can't wait to hear about your trip report and make sure you go to La Valencia in downtown LJ just for the old school Moorish design from the 1920's..it's the pink Hotel..

Have a blast!

From Torrey Pines Rd if you do the hike back to your Hotel LJ it is Princess Street that turns into Spindrift and just wanted to clarify..about a block.
Best..
