1 day in San Francisco - suggestions needed
Hi there, I am coming home from Paris to Sydney via San Francisco in early November and I was wondering if it is worth having a very short stopover. I can only spend 1 day. Can I see enough in one day to warrant a stopover?? Any tips on the best sites to see in such a limited amount of time would be great.

Karen: Of course, living in SF i would say yes, but i don't know how long your are planing to stay. You'd need to go through customs, take a 45 minute ride to the waterfront area. There is a 49 mile scenic route throughout the city which would allow you to "see" probably every area. Why don't you check out possible tours leaving the airport. Good Luck!

If you have never seen sf I think you should stop---you may well have fairly huge jet lag---if you don't sleep on the plane--for a one-day visit it might be best merely to take a city tour of some sort--take a street car to the water--you could take a ferry from the ferry building to sausalito--a short trip I always enjoy----sf has some museums--the new contemporary is pretty interesting--

It is most definitely worth it! On our first stop in San Fran, we too only had a day. A tour around the city is a good idea; also be sure to take the Trolley, walk around both Fishermans Wharf and Chinatown to get a taste of the delicious culture. Obviously, more time is needed to see it well (we spent three days there on our last trip out west and that was just barely enough) but take advantage of the opportunity to see an incredible city.
(Reminds me of an old song, one of our favorites when traveling: "We may never pass this way again..." !!!!!)

I'd say go for it (and I'm not from S.F.). Even if you only take the trolley and visit China Town and fisherman's wharf you can get at least a "feel" for San Francisco, which is a wonderful town. Museums can make you sleepy so I won't recommend them but to me, art is a big part in this town as are great restaurants. I'd do the "North Beach" area for pizza! Have fun.
