Want to travel, but on a budget

Here's an idea - one that works in Costa Rica, I know:
Pick a guidebook. Look at the budget accommodations and pick one. No website? No sweat. Now search online for a travel agent INSIDE the country where you want to visit. The agent will have a website. Email the agent and ask them to CALL the budget accommodations you have chosen and to make your reservations. But budget hotels do not pay travel agents commissions, you say, so they won't book those reservations. Wrong! They will if you agree to pay their commission. If the budget hotel is "budget" enough, then the addition of the commission will add little to the bill - in Costa Rica about $5. Still much cheaper than those fancy places with websites.
The best of the inexpensive accommodation choices do not have websites, and the managers probably do not speak your language, but the agent will take care of that for you and you are ready to go.
Now go!
