Sanja Matsuri was May 16-18 this year. That surely brought out more Japanese to Asakusa than just about any other days of the year.

Your perception of the crowd sounds likely, and I won't need to give a lesson on how to spot non-Japanese Asians in a crowd. Some people can't tell the difference. My J-dar is faulty sometimes.
