Thanksgiving Getaway ... Alone. Ideas?

I am a foreign national here in the US. I don't have family and I don't really want to crash any of my friends' family Thanksgiving get-together. I tried that before. Not really comfortable.

So, I thought I could go somewhere, by myself, where I could enjoy a few days off. Maybe 3-4 days. Budget, 1500 - 2000.

I don't know if I could escape the Thanksgiving spirit within the US. But if there is a place where single people go for a break during that time, then I'd strongly consider that. Otherwise, if it needs to be outside the country, I'm open to go to the Caribbean, or neighboring countries.

Your suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
-C

How about Montreal? Canadian Thanksgiving is a different date.

I go solo often to Puerto Vallarta Mexico. The weather is great there around Thanksgiving. You don't mention where in the US you're located, but PV is easy to get to from many locations (I'm on the west coast).

Lots of possibilities -- where are you based? Getting flight around Thanksgiving can be expensive and very hectic. The two busiest travel days of the year are around the Thanksgiving weekend. Airports are mobbed.

So if it is somewhere you could drive to it might be easier.

Mumbai?

If you actually read the OP it says: "I am a foreign national here in the US"

Thank you for your replies.

I thought about going to Canada, especially Toronto. I would be coming from Buffalo, NY and Toronto is just a drive from us. But I think I might pass on the city escape at this time. I had also been to Montreal with friends and it was a great experience!

Puerto Vallarta, MX sounds really good. I might just go there. Now my next step is to find a place there that would be fitting for solo travelers.

@Suze -- Do you go to one of the all-inclusives in PV? I've never been to MX, but I had been to an all-inc in Jamaica and it was more of a family-oriented thing. It was great, nonetheless.

Thanks again everyone for your replies!

I stay at a regular Mexican hotel in downtown PV (no resort, no all-inclusive). Here's my favorite one but there are many similar (and nicer if this seems too rustic for what you had in mind). It's 2 blocks from the beach.

They'll likely up their rates on the holiday weekend but rooms are typically around $55/night for a single person.

Or go back to Jamaica. But go to Negril, and don't stay in an A-I. I think your choice of resorts is probably why it was "family oriented". look at www.negrilonestop.com use the map and click on the non-AI hotels on either the 7-mile Beach or the Cliffs.

Or take the opposite approach and have an extreme Halloween. Go to New Orleans where there is a certain Halloween spirit every night of the year.

Iceland! Bit chilly right now but an easy flight and a fun weekend getaway. Check Icelandair's website for package deals.

I second the suggestion of Puerto Vallarta. I've been there twice (both solo and with a group of friends) and loved it. The group trip was over Thanksgiving and we had great weather. I stayed at Dreams, an all inclusive, for the group trip and really liked the hotel and the more private beach (which meant less people trying to sell you things). But it's a little bit farther removed from the action, and may be a bit too isolating on your own.

When I went solo, I stayed at the Hyatt which I loved. It was within walking distance to the marina area which is great, but still a bit removed. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably stay in downtown where more of the action is.

You will love PV. Another option would be to head to Sayulita (still flying in to PV).

now that we know the OPers origin we can advise better, wasn't meant to be provocative at all. A south Florida or Bahamas location would entail the least travel to get to a sandy beach destination for a long weekend. Mexico is a bit too far.
