Need to get skiis and surfboard to CA from Boston - how?

Hello,
I posted this in the Fodorite Lounge, then thought this was the better forum for this particular topic.
My apologies.
My son just found out tonight that he will be moving to California in two weeks!
He'll be driving there - from Boston to California.
The only thing is, he can't fit his skiis and surfboard in his small car.
Does anyone have suggestions how this might be done?
I appreciate your help, and so does he.
Thank you.

He was thinking of possibly doing just that. This is very good imput. He will be putting some more thought into the possibilities. He's got a decent amount of stuff to bring.. large pictures and things like that to consider also.

Actually -- you'll probably get 100X more response in the Lounge than here. Maybe 2% of Fodorites (and that may be generous) read this board. You could post on the USA Forum to reach the folks who are 'afraid' of the Lounge

OR, why not rent a U-Haul and pull the car behind.

OR, ship them.

OR, sell on the east coast, buy on the west coast.

But the roof rack is likely the best idea if he wants to take them, but it will have horrible effects on his gas mileage.

I would also do the roof rack. He should get a quote on shipping, though.
