Frustrated Africa addict traveling solo

I'm so thrilled that Fodors has added this forum. I will be traveling solo for the first time this September when I head to Zambia with Wilderness Travel. There will be 5 others on the trip, but no other solo travelers (as far as I know).
Now that I'm traveling alone I'm having a hard time finding Africa safaris (small groups) that go to the destinations I'm interested in. All the exciting itineraries are for 2 or more people. Grrrrrr.

Are there any solo travelers out there that are interested in going on safaris to Africa?

phernska,

There is a website called Travel Chums that may help.

www.travelchums.com

Good luck.

I just found this site as well. I'll be going on a 6 week "camping" and some "facilities" tour to southern Africa with Dragoman in April and May. I've heard that it's mostly younger people, but I'm anxious to see the countries, so the age of the tour group is not important to me. I, too, find the single suppliment a deterrent to some of my travel plans, but there are always ways to enjoy a trip - with or without a travel buddy. I'm a single 56 y/o female, recently retired, and have traveled on my own many times. I think people-watching is a fascinating way to spend that "waiting in the airport for the connecting flight" time. One of my best recent purchases is a AA solar-powered battery charger. AA batteries are used in almost all digital cameras, flashlights, and other small travel items. Bon Voyage.

I'm also planning on travelling solo in September. I'm trying to plan my itenarary and am also having troubles with the 2 or more people requirement. Wagon Trails seem to have some good trips.
Have you decided which areas you are going to yet?

Hi Eddie...I'm going on a walking safari in Zambia in September with Wilderness Travel out of Berkeley. The single supplement wasn't bad and the group size is limited to 6. Next year I'm considering a custom safari to either Botswana and Zambia or Botswana and Zimbabwe or just Botswana. I've never traveled to Africa during the "Green Season" and I'm told it's quite a treat and the prices are lower and some of the lodges drop the single supplement. It's still expensive as hell, though!!
