Be careful about showing up at remote places like Zermatt, Switzerland without reservations. When I was there skiing, I could have sold my room for $500 per night if there had been any other place to stay. People who showed up there were just out of luck with no way to immediately get back out of there. I've often wondered what happened to them!

I do not like the hassle of looking for accomdations upon arrival. This worked for me in the 20s but in my 40s I want to pick and choose where I am going to stay and have my room waiting when I arrive. This also helps me plan my route - airport bus, train or taxi - ahead of time, especially when arriving after a liong flight or with bags.
I don't really schedule anything else except for museum reservation at busy times because waiting in line is not a good use of time.
