My friends and I were planning on a post-graduation trip to Thailand (scheduled to leave today) which we cancelled last week due to the current violence going on there. We lost quite a bit of money but are trying to plan a new trip to a different location. We are hoping to plan/go as soon as possible. Any ideas on countries to go outside of the US that have a lot of new things to see/do and are not terribly costly? We are trying to keep the budget under $3000 since we already lost money on the Thailand trip. So far we have thought about Greece/the Greek islands and Belize/Guatemala. Any suggestions would be great!

Argentina would make my list. Maybe a colonial Mexico + beach trip. Egypt. London can be surprisingly inexpensive. Madrid and Barcelona.

Honestly, I think Thailand overrated, anyway.

Greece is not especially cheap and they have their own problems right now.

Very unfortunate that you decided to cancel your trip to Thailand. $3,000 isn't going to take you anywhere in places like Greece. While in Thailand you could have had a fantastic few months on that kind of money.
Even during the unrest, all the protests were in Bangkok. Sorry buddy, but you are really going to regret cancelling the trip. Especially now that everything is back to normal.

That's why I mention Mexico. It is economical for a beach style vacation.

Agree with SiamJai: Thailand is safe now, Phuket was unaffected by the unrest, and as beautiful as always. I have lived here for 23 years and three military coups. Believe me, no problem, especially here in Phuket!
