Early in July, I booked two nites at a posada in San Antonio de Areco, followed by five nites in BA and then three nites at Iguazu. Unfortunately, the posada wants a cash deposit and it will cost almost as much to wire the funds as one nite would cost. So I've got a couple of spare nites and am open to suggestions.

For the record, when I leave the Falls, I plan to see the mission country, then bus west to Salta and then south until I run out of time, then come back north, visiting the Valdes Peninsula and perhaps some of the other parks south of there before returning to BA and my flight.

One possibility would be to fly to Puerto Madryn and spend a couple of nites there--or even three --taking one nite out of BA and making it up later.

Another would be to find another place in San Antonio de Areco or another town in the pampas. I am not that much into horseback riding but I would like to see the pampas. I've decided that the cost of a stay at an estancia would be too high in relation to my interest in staying there, but I could probably get a taxi to take me out into the pampas to have a look, or even spend a day on one. Or I could spend a couple of nites in Colonia Uruguay or find an estancia there.

So what would you all do?

PS I might also go direct to BA from the airport and then travel to the Falls via Uruguay and stay at an estancia in that country.

I came to exactly the same conclusion re the cost of an estancia visit - and partly because of my propensity to falling off of horses! I looked at spending a day or two in Colonia on our upcoming trip but, whilst we enjoyed our time there before, I was quite shocked at the cost of the Buquebus ferry there and decided against it.

Could you perhaps suggest PayPal to the estancia? Easy to set up and way cheaper than a bank transfer.

Last time we were in Argentina we travelled by bus from Iguazu to concordia and crossed the border to Salto. The bus dropped us off in the middle of nowhere and we were lucky to get a ride to the immigration post at the borde. Not a great deal there apart from some hot springs. From there we got the bus to Montevideo and thence to Colonia.

Puerto Madryn/ Peninsula Valdes needs two full days ( 3 nights) so bear that in mind in your planning. Perhaps more if you are really into wildlife.

I was going to suggest Uruguay. Maybe Montevideo rather than Colonia. Don't remember the ferry being that expensive, must have gone up.

O.K. Thanks. It appears to be around $100 round trip to Colonia.

I cancelled the reservation in San Antonio and now I'm thinking to leave BA by the ferry on my last day, look around Colonia, and then take a couple of nites to reach Iguazu Falls by bus through Uruguay.

My wife has a Paypal account she uses for shopping but I didn't think of using that.
I've looked at a map of the Pampas and it stretches over most of Uruguay.

I'll try to contact the B&B in BA and see if I can shift it a couple of days forward. That would make it easier on my day of arrival, too.

Things in Buenos Aires are fairly costly these days. I gather inflation has caught up with devaluation.

Prices similar to US, this past March.

I had one day in Montevideo and liked it (better steak there, too).

My B&B near Recoleta in BA is very reasonable---less than US$80 a nite. I'll soon see.

To update--decided to book another place in San Antonio that accepted credit cards. Looks like a pretty good place at a fair price.
