The WSJ says it is cheap to eat out in BA - So, what's new????
The WSJ headlines: "In Buenos Aires, the Best Restaurants Are Now a Bargain"
http://online.wsj.com/articles/in-bu...=Nicholas+Gill
However, I wouldn't be caught dead in any of the restaurants mentioned in the article. As a resident, I consider them touristy and overpriced, by local standars, of course. Unbelievably cheap, for instance, by NY or Paris standards.
But there are many other cheaper great restaurants which cater mainly to locals and it is quite true that, for the last few years, it has been getting cheaper and cheaper to dine out in BA, if you estimate the cost in "blue" dollars.
What are you waiting for? You'll have a great time in my town, even if you are on a budget.

"What are you waiting for? " could be the new slogan for the Argentina Tourism Authority. Reminiscent of the australian tourist board's ' where the hell are you? of a few years ago.
Hoping to return to BA late in 2015

Top poster crellston: I hope to see you in late 2015.
For the sake of old times, I'll try vERY hard to find a weird couple to join us for lunch or dinner.
Excuse me, just an insider's joke about something that happened YEARS ago.

Last night, we went to this place:
http://tinyurl.com/9dkwudw
http://www.guiaoleo.com.ar/restaurantes/Rodi-408
It's not at all highly rated, but, FOR THE PRICE and THE LOCATION (Recoleta), I found it reasonably good.
I had not been there for quite a while, but I'll be back. Cost per person at the "blue" dollar exchange rate: 10, 15 bucks max. An unbelievable bargain, for tourists.
One thing which tourists who complain about our dinner hours may be interested in: they are open ALL DAY, which means that if you want to have dinner at 5 PM, which is unthinkable for us, you can do so.
I would only avoid it at very popular days and hours. For instance, Saturday at 10 PM.

av, You did in fact go to Don Julio, profiled prominently with photo in the WSJ piece. I witnessed it. (And I agree with the review - excellent skirt steak and Malbec in an atmospheric neighborhoody untouristy setting for an unbelievable price.

Hi, crosscheck!
When should you expect you back in wonderful Argentina?
Tourists LOVE Don Julio and it was near where you were staying, which is why I suggested we have dinner there.
However, I feel it is touristy, crowded, noisy, expensive by local standards and the service is below par, at best. The steaks are just decent.
Come back to BA soon, crosscheck and I'll take you there again, but ONLY if you INSIST. LOL!!
Anyway, you'll have a great time in my town.

Correcting myself: I said above that I suggested we have dinner at Don Julio.
My memory failed me (Ï'm an old guy, after all). YOU suggested having dinner at Don Julio, among other things because it was near your hotel and you had to go on a tango tour after dinner.
I suggested having dinner elsewhere.

I did in fact select DJ, noted on many food blogs and 10 best lists. For me it delivered as the parrilla as my dreams - memorable steaks and empanadas to die for in a cool neighborhood setting (with excellent company of course!) There were some tourists, but all European, also lots of locals in large groups.
Full disclosure: I did encounter a slightly better steak the next night at the more low key, quieter Caldon del Soho. Let's go there next time and compare. Hope to return for longer in 2015.

Great, crosscheck!
I can't wait for 2015!
Any chance you'll allow yours truly to choose the restaurant?
However, I read good reviews about Caldén del Soho, so maybe, just MAYBE, I'll let you talk me into going there. LOL!!!
