RIO BRAZIL
I will be in Rio for 3 days in September. I believe the Sheraton Resort Hotel is right on the beach - most hotels are on the other side of the road. Has anyone stayed there, please. If so, is it noisy and which room would you recommend. I just like a quite room with a balcony - overlooking the sea.
Any help would be appreciated.
Many thanks

The Sheraton is in Leblon past the beaches of Ipanema and Leblon, a good location if you want to be away from the hustle and bustle of Rio. The road that goes past the Sheraton is Ave. Oscar Neimeyer is narrow and busy so don't get a room overlooking the street. Ask for a room overlooking the Pool or the ocean, this is the best.
I was in Rio this past February and stayed in Ipanema, I had friends who were staying in the Sheraton, I walked to the Sheraton everyday it took about 1/2 hour, nice walk, it was my exercise for the day.
The beach is not private you will share it with the locals only, most guests stay by the olympic size pool and they have restaurants in the hotel and in the pool area.
At night you will have to take a taxi to go anywhere but during the day if you like to walk it's doable.
I don't stay there anymore because I prefer to stay out by the center of things happenning while the Sheraton is a little removed but it's still good, just don't get stuck there because it's a long way to fly just to stay at a pool, you can go anywhere for that.

There are many hotels in Copacabana, I have not stayed in all of them, as a matter of fact I don't stay in hotels anymore only rent apartments. The only reason why I saw the Ouro Verde recently in the past couple of years while walking Copacabana is because I saw it in a movie. I think the movie was Blame it on Rio and I took notice of it in the movie then when I went to Rio, I spotted it. Looked like a good old hotel, I think I took a picture of it too. This was maybe 2 or 3 years ago.
Recently I read on another site a poster said that a new club/bar opened up where the Ouro Verde hotel was. I found this interesting but have not visited it yet to confirm what it is all about.
Blame it on Rio must have been about 1984, so this hotel has been around quite some time like most of the Hotels in Rio. I was first there in 1980 and not much has changed, a little but not much.

I have stayed in the Sheraton with my children many years ago, good for children, tennis courts , good pool, beach tiny but ok in those days... it is a good location if you wish to stay away from the town proper. So I guess I would come back only if I go with my grand children now,....

Dear All,
Thank you very much for your helpful advice. I will be spending just 3 nights in Rio before going to the Pantanal and the Amazon so would like quiet nights following my flight from London. From what you say, the Sheraton seems quite a good bet.
After my wildlife trip, I would then like to tour up the coast as far as Fortaleza if possible. I will be looking for a nice quiet beach - and, even more important, somewhere from where I can swim in the sea (I am not a strong swimmer and strong under-currents put me off!!).
Any ideas? I expect accommodation is expensive!!
Many thanks
Pat
