Peruvian Amazon
We are planning a 2 week trip to Peru this September. Of course, we want to go to Machu Picchu, but we also want to go the amazon jungle. Any suggestions? Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado or somewhere else? Would prefer not to be in a touristy area, but we will be semi pressed for time.

If you go to Iquitos you will be at the "real" Amazon.
You could do that at the beginning or end of your trip flying round trip from Lima. I would allow for at least 4 nights to make it worthwhile.
Tahuayo is a lodge that is operated in conjunction with the local community, if you are interested in a less commercial type venture.

I go to the Explorama lodges out of Iquitos; in fact, I'm planning to do that for the fourth time this summer. My favorite of them is Explornapo. I love the Peruvian Amazon; in fact, I really enjoyed all of Peru. www.explorama.com
