An interesting day so far. Too interesting. Got up early and went for a swim before breakfast. I f you'd do that every morning you'd live forever. Then we got picked up for the favela tour where we drove up and down really narrow streets, visited a house overlooking the favela, walked up and down narrow alleys and labyrinth walkways, visited a school, and bought some stuff. DW liked the favela tour.

Ate lunch again downstairs on the sidewalk where 30" table rounds are set up on empty beer kegs and steak, rice, stroganoff, and french fries are very good. As are the caipirinhas, which taste like mohitos.

Then on to the beach. Where we sat behind some girl who I suggested was the 8th wonder of the world (her bathing suit was the 9th wonder). So then DW and I go on a walk to review proper behavior in front of the children and when we get back, guess what, the children report the girl is from Arkansas, for god's sake, and not only that, but DS#1 has a date with her tonight.

This is trouble, with a T. DS#1 has a flight tomorrow at 9. This can't end well. I should be happy but all I do is cry.

Oh, why oh why didn't we listen to cold and leave early?

Oh it sounds to me like it will have a happy ending. Maybe two. Or three.

What a fabulous report!!! Do you have the vrbo.com page for the apartment you stayed in BA? I've looked at several, but yours sound great. Your sense of humor and outlook on life is just great -- a little edgy -- just perfect.

...that's the link to our apt in buenos aires. We liked it a lot. The one in rio is reasonable ($200/night for 3 bedrooms, two of which have AC) but a little uncharming.

Now, back to the report. Gracias a dios, Emelia, the girl from Arkansas, didn't call. Whilst I'm sorry for DS#1 that the situation did not develop, I'm glad that they didn't go out dancing and drinking, fall in love, get married, and have children. Although grandchildren would be nice eventually. But not yet. Also, I don't really want to know where my daughter-in-law has tatoos.

So today we take the 512 bus to botanical garden. Then to airport, home, and a normal life. Gotta go now to meet DW and DS#2 and go to Botanical Garden.

Have a safe and uneventful trip back to home where it has finally gotten warm and beautiful.

Never been to Rio, but still loving your trip reports. My daughter (the one who was in BA for 6 months in the fall) loved your Argentina descriptions, especially your summary of the nature of the country - she agrees.

We are both glad you decided against the leather (mostly) jacket and a Speedo on the beach - guessing your wife and kids agree.

Hope your son is enjoying his studies - when my dtr was there UBA was on strike for half the time. She loved Argentina but also had a renewed appreciation of some things US.

We're home! Yes is right, it's a beautiful day in DC. Mowed the yard, swept the patio, potted some plants, resumed our normal life. Thanks again to all my fodors advisors. It's been fun sharing our adventures with all of you. The ending was happy, even if it wasn't quite what cold envisioned.

santamonica, well done. I really enjoyed your photos of BsAs; your San Telmo apartment, inside and out is just gorgeous. So, now I can look for youall preparing a photo/commentary book to be sold in Politics and Prose ?

Marnie, thanks for the suggestion. It would be great one day to see my book for sale downstairs in the remainder section.
