owlwoman's suggestion is a good one if you r using a guide. If u are driving yourself which it sounds like u r doing, the car rental cost is much higher when u pick up and drop off the rental in different locations. It would save about 3 hours of driving time if u didn't have to spend so much more $$ to do it that way.

Do you need reservations to visit wineries here like you do in Mendoza? Any top recommended Wineries? Can you just have your hotel call a day or two before? Any Winery Lunches that are outstanding?

We did make a reservation to have lunch at San Pedro de Yacochuya Winery. It was not worth the price we paid 4 lunch -- lunch was not particuarly good and it was just us and the woman who owned the winery. Didn't find her particularly engaging or interesting. They did have great wines and beautiful views though. We also liked the wines at Finca de Nubes and just stopped into visit and check out their wines without any reservation.

Thanks, yestravel.

Your trip advice (and reports) just keeps on giving... We are planning a NW trip this February, so I will be re-reading your reports and checking in with you, too. Our friends from France will be planning much of this, but I hope to engage Flintstones as well.

Best to you and to DH.

I must have made minor mistakes in planning here. I have already booked our flight thru Lan to our trip to NW. We have a flight to Salta for the first day arriving at 2pm. (I am hoping all the flights go in schedule).

Then the whole afternoon we will explore Salta (first the MAMM). Like I said my initial plan was to spend a night in Purma- or Tilcara the next day. After realizing and learning from tips and advice the long hour drive to Cachi, I decided to extend our second night in Salta and leave Purmamarca region the same day. Then head to Cachi to Cafayate the 3rd night where I intend us to stay in Cafayate. On 4th night, we will have much time to explore Cafayate wineries and can go back to Salta late afternoon. We leave Salta on 5th day late afternoon so that gives us more time to explore Salta what we have not finished the first day.

I have booked hotels for all those nights. I am still open to getting a guide. I should have gotten a guide first to give us direction first what we should do on how to explore the regions in this 5 day period!

Flintstone, I will send you email.

Thank you.
