Mendoza in September or where else should we go?

Is Mendoza worth going to the first week of September? And by "worth" I mean will everything be dried up and brown and dreary and chilly or is it still worth it? We're planning to be in the Santiago area for about 4-5 days and thought it would then be worth it to spend 4-5 days in Mendoza since it's an easy flight/drive. If that's not a great time to go to Mendoza, does anyone have any suggestions on where to go instead? Buenos Aires? I've always wanted to go to Patagonia but, without doing any research, my guess is we don't have enough time and it might be too snowy still to access some roads that far south in early September. We've never been to Chile or Argentina. [We have a very good friend who's family owns a winery in Mendoza and can thus "set us up" with transportation, lodging, what to do, etc. (the friend will not be there then), hence the idea to visit Mendoza.]
