Least expensive way to get from the Santiago airport into town

What is the least expensive way to get into downtown Santiago from the airport late at night?

One of the two airport bus companies, Centropuerto or Turbus. They will stop at metro stops in town. Do not use the metro at rush hour though.

I used the TransVIP shared taxi service which has what I thought were reasonable rates; you go out past the shills waiting at the door and the counter is right there; they were quite reliable. There's an account of it in my trip report here (down past the Amazon): http://www.fodors.com/community/sout...rip-report.cfm

We had our hotel arrange transportation from the airport to the hotel with their taxi service. It cost US $32.00 which we didn't think was too bad. The cost was added to our hotel bill.

Depends on how many people in your group. If just one person, then TransViP is probably the best combination of cost and convenience FROM the airport.

Going TO the airport however they are like similar SuperShuttle type services and they want to pick you up too far ahead of time, and waste time stopping at other lodgings. So I'd take a hotel transfer or taxi.

With four people I imagine a taxi or hotel transfer would be better since the shuttle charges are per person. (I'm not sure how the hotel shuttle compares to a taxi)

The cheapest option is still the airport bus to the metro, even with four, which is your original question. The official taxis at the airport are only supposed to take 3 passengers, but maybe that depends on the amount of luggage. I suppose it boils down to who is paying; one person for all four or is it two couples etc.
Airport bus about US$3 each, metro about US$1 each.
Shuttle (depends on destination) about US$8-10 each.
Taxi (depends on destination) about US$30-35 for the car.
