Help with Patagonia planning

Hi, my husband and I want to go to Patagonia in November (or March) and are trying to figure out the best way to arrange things. This itinerary is pretty much exactly what we want to do:

Our question is, could we do the same trip on our own for less money? I'm not sure how to arrange the logistics. Would really appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks,
Karen

Sure you can do it on your own. Book your flights on LAN, buses as you go. I didn't go to Ushaia - no interest unless I was sailing to Antarctica - but I did visit TdP, El Calafate and El Chalten on my own as part of a two month SA trip. See: http://www.fodors.com/community/sout...-patagonia.cfm

thursdaysd, yes, i read your trip report already - loved it. What I'm really trying to figure out is if we can do it on our own for less money than the tour. Our time is much more limited (two weeks max), so we need to be efficient in getting from place to place and not have to spend a lot of each day figuring out logistics. I'd like to have a solid plan in place - not totally regimented - but with most transportation/lodging booked in advance and a pretty good idea of what we'll do each day.

Thanks.

I can only comment that the public transport options within TdP were limited. For expample, to transfer from the east end to Glacier Grey was so expensive that I signed up for a tour from Las Torres hotel.

so I really am not sure if you can do this for less on your own for two people. I guess you would need to cost out the transportation options. Car rental might be an option.

For part of our trip to Patagonia we used a TA. I think we paid more than if we had booked ourselves. We had a rental car in TdP that we picked up prior to getting there. If you have the time now you could most likely save money by DIY. We have a long TR for our trip. You can scroll thru to find the portions where you want to go. It's beautiful area and hope you have great trip.
