Do We Need Yellow Fever Shots?

My husband & I will be staying in Argentina Jan 16 to Feb 16th. We will be renting an apartment in BA (Palermo, Botanico) for the month. We will also, be taking side trips to Iguazu Falls, staying at B&B on an island in the Tigre Delta, going to Colonia, etc.

Do we need yellow fever shots?

Don't think so. We have been to the same places twice and never considered a yellow fever shot.

Most government websites recommend getting the shots for Iguazu. Here is a link to th erelavant page of teh UK Foreign Office site:

Take advice from a specialist travel clinic.

If you then visit another country like Uruguay

after iguazu YF jab/cert would be required

so easier to get it than worry...

I agree about taking the YF shot for Iguazzu. It is good for 10 years and is almost always without any side effects.

The consequences of getting YF are dire, so follow the recommendations, as we did, and seriously consider getting the vaccination.

We just loved Iguazzu Falls, and I hope you will too.

What B&B are you staying in on the Tigre Delta ?

There is no question you should get a yellow fever shot.

The nurse at the travel clinic told me yf is almost always deadly. All it takes to get yf is to be bitten by the wrong mosquito. Forget whether it's required and just do it. There's no sense in putting your life at risk because you don't want to go to the trouble and expense of getting the shot.

Thank you all for your replies to my query.

The link of B&B that we are hoping to stay at on an island in the Tigre Delta is http://www.hosterialospecanes.com/

Where did you stay when you were visiting Iguazu? What were your favorite restaurants? Is there anything that we should see or do that you thought was special?

We got yellow fever. We went to Virginia Mason travel clinic and they said it was highly recommended. We didnt experience any side effects but at all but it was difficult to find. We ended up getting a perscription from the doctor but had to find a pharmacy to get it filled.
We got flu, tetnus, hep a, and oral typhoid - and it really wasnt that bad. Arm was sore the first day but fine the next. They even suggested a measles booster for me so we had that one thrown in as well - they said no malaria though, which surprised me.

We have had all the shots & oral fixes, too. Might as well, get the yellow fever one, too. Who knows where we will end up on our next trip. It might be mandatory!

Condu - thanks for the B&B lead. I look forward to checking it out. DH and I really enjoyed our day trip to Tigre, and plan to spend a night there this year.

Iguazzu was spectular: the Argentine side and the Brazilian side. I had been to Niagra and Victoria - but Iguazzu was the most incredible experience. We stayed in the town - Puerto Iguazzu-so as to have a more cultural experience than the Sheraton. But the Sheraton's views and convenience (especially if only staying one night) cannot be beat. We stayed in the St. George Hotel http://www.hotelsaintgeorge.com/inicio_i.html and thought it was pretty fine. Others have been mentioned as good: http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/argen...niguazubb.html for example.

As to restaurants, we found 2 excellent restaurants - one for an outdoor assado/parilla and another, a more sophisticated restaurant. They were not far from our hotel; we just walked around the town and surroundings, but I cannot remember their names. We found them by wandering (and from the great smells). You can come into town for dinner if you stay at the Sheraton as the food is mediocre there.

We took Taxis to the Falls, (~ 15 minutes) which were not expensive. We negotiated with one taxi driver to take us to the Brazilian side, and caught another later in the day for our return to the hotel. No problems at all. Of course, we did have a Visa, and that was a bit pricey - for us a good calculation: we saved on the Sheraton and splurged on the Visa. But those who stay in the Sheraton with the Falls view are never disappointed, either.

We had one taxi driver take us up to the point where Arg./Brazil & Paraguay meet. Kind of neat, very touristy spot.

So, have a wonderful time in Iguazzu, Colonia & Tigre. We will be in BsAs all of February (minus a week in the NOA), so maybe we can meet for a drink and hear about your adventures.

Best, ~MarnieWDC

Thank you for your over view of Puerto Iguazu. We are staying at the Hotel Posada La Sorgente. I tried to get reservations with the Secret Garden & another B&B but, didn't get an answer from either of them after to two tries with each of them.

We would love to get together with you for drinks, etc. It is so much fun to share travel adventures! There is a pool at the apartment complex that we are staying. Might be a nice way to get together & beat the heat.

Let me know how I can contact you? My user name is the same on the TA forums, as here. You can let me know your info, there.

I have submitted a trip report to Fodor's forum on the Bangkok leg of our six week trip to SE Asia, January/February 2009.
I will write one on Chiang Mai, then, Cambodia & Vietnam when I find the time.

We are scheduled to get our yellow fever shots Dec. 9th. Also, our first snowfall according to the weather forecast. We had a big snowstorm last year when we were getting our shots up-dated for SE Asia..LOL!

Ciao, condu
