Choosing hotels in Rio, Brazil.

Hello,
I am having a hard time deciding on whether to get an upgraded room/suite at the JW Marriott or the Hilton or a regular ocean view room at the Sofitel hotel (Caesar Park).
I hear the location in Ipanema is much better (safer and quieter) where the Sofitel is, but for the price I could get a better room at the JW or Hilton. However I also read that the service at the Marriott is not at par with the JW name (loyal member) and rooms can be noisy. On the other hand the JW rated a bit higher than the Hilton.
The two most important attributes I am looking for are 1. Ocean view room 2. Great location. I looked into the Belmond Copacabana Palace and the Fasano their prices are a bit too much.
Thoughts?

My husband and I were in Rio a few years ago on our way to our summer house and we ended up at the Fasano as I couldn't find anything else that I liked in Ipanema/Leblon. I'd been to Rio a few times as a child/teen with my parents and I knew I didn't like the atmosphere in Copacabana. I have never felt too comfortable in Brazil but my husband had never been to Rio so I thought he had to see it now that we were changing planes in Rio.

My two most important attributes for choosing a hotel were location and a pool with a view. The pool because I wanted somewhere where we could stay if we didn't feel safe. I went for the ocean view with balcony but it was a bit of a waste as we were hardly in the room. The views from the pool and the caipirinhas were fantastic, and Ipanema felt quite safe even late at night. Lots of people and policemen around.

I can't remember why I didn't consider the Sofitel, I may have been told it was undergoing renovations or was very run-down. Given its location it would be my first choice among the hotels you are considering. I don't care too much for service and value location more than a better room. The Fasano was actually quite average.

Avoid Copacabana palace at all cost - it is a dreadful hotel.
You have to be super careful in Rio wherever you stay. Leave your good watch and jewelry at home and don't walk about looking too prosperous.
