Chile or Argentina???

Tough choice -- they both are beautiful countries. Torres del Paine is one of the most spectacular places that I have ever been. Chilean Lake country is beautiful. The NW of Argentina is very scenic somewhat like the SW of the USA. IF is incredible.

Argentina, especially driving the circuit arounds Salta and the north west, but for a combination of the two the lake district on both sides of teh borde takes a lot of beating. I particularly like Pucon and San Martin de los Andes. Iguazu of course but that only takes a day or two. Would love to have gone to Torres de Paine but the weather was against us when we were in Chile

Crellston, what do you define (roughly) as the circuit around Salta? We are heading there in March and are having trouble what to include and what not to, with 9 days currently slated for that area. (Plus my wife wants to visit the Valley of the Moon and the other national park down there.)

Not crellston, but we did a circuit in the NW, flying into Salta, staying a night or 2, driving to Cachi and spending the night there. Then drove to Cafayate and stayed there and explored the area. Drove back around Salta to the North and stayed in Tilcara and ended in Purnmaraca before heading back to to Salta. U can read my TR

We did pretty much the same as yestravel. 9 days is a great amount of time. we spent a week on the circuit starting and finishing in Salta more detail on the places we visited and route are on our blog http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blo...ai/1/tpod.html entries 75- 81 cover our time there. Happy to answer and=y specific questions. Salineras Grande is, IMHO a must see. In a year long RTW trip this circuit would be in my top 5 experiences!

Y and C, thanks so much! Now I need to find time to read your reports. Without checking my notes, I think the places you have are already on our route except I hope to be able to get a bit further north to Humahuaca and then to those two national parks I mentioned. We also will definitely be at Sayta for a two (maybe three) day horseback trip into the Andes.
After this Salta area I want to get quickly to Mendoza and then take the bus over the Andes to Santiago, spend one day there then fly home. That seems better than to retrace steps to EZE.
