I am going to have 5 days in Buenos Aires, and I think that may be more than I need, a solo woman traveler. So I would love to hear some recommendations for day trips outside the city.

So would I! We are there for a few days in September and are trying to dream up something new to do

Last time we were there we did day trips to the Tigre delta by train and spent a few days in Colonia del Sacremento in Uruguay, which can also be done as a day trip.

Those are two options on my short list - nice to have the feedback. I would enjoy, I think, an overnight or two on an estancia but a daytrip sounds a bit touristy from what I have read.

Hi crellston - If you've been to Colonia, I suppose you might have a look at Montevideo. Remember that the beef is better in Uruguay!

Thursdaysd - these are two very good references for the sort of tours I like to do - small opportunities to engage with locals and heading off the beaten path. I often take the typical 2-hour city bus tour as soon as I arrive to get a sense of scope and where things are located. Then using resources such as yours, i focus on the not so obvious. And I walk and walk.

I lived in Buenos Aires and other countries because of my job. I can say that Buenos Aires is huge! and there are many things to do. My family and I with a small group did a great tour with a private guide in Buenos Aires. She customized all for us and gave ideas. Great idea but expensive. Thanks, mountaindog, I like tours like this and I will check it out. My 4 1/2 days in BA are at the end of a 38-day journey - I expect to want to take it easy and absorb. Would like to see the obvious high points but also love the lesser known, the local flavor, the hidden gems.

Update: Crellston, Cafe Tortoni was exactly what I wanted. Front row table, great music, and I could watch the dancers' feet. 350 pesos plus a couple of glasses of wine. And the others that were seated at my table were friendly - and spoke English! We had a good time.
