SambaChula: Enough already! Just get over yourself.

I'm a woman who exercises caution when traveling alone, and who appreciates having the door held open for me. I have been reading the Argentina forum for quite a while as I research traveling to that country, and have been impressed by the helpfulness shown by Avrooster. This discussion has become silly and rather petty. Could we get back to talking about travel?

Ok, I reread what AV wrote above and it seems to me that his first response was to offer to help the OP and to suggest she email him on his personal email. He then added "Should you have any worries (and you should, as a woman traveling alone) you can research me here and on Trip Advisor where, years ago, I used to post as http://tinyurl.com/ztjnlfm"

Before SC started in on this statement, I took it to mean that if the OP had any concerns about contacting a strange man while traveling alone in a foreign country, she could research AV's credentials on the forum. This seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to say, not patronizing in the least. As a woman traveling alone I would (and should) be worried about making personal contact with a stranger. Nothing to apologize for.

AV can speak for himself, but it seems SambaChula took his words out of context and made an unnecessary federal case out of them. As I said before, enough already.

Having just been invited, gently and kindly, to chime in on this thread, as a solo female traveler, as someone who researched, sought out and has befriended avrooster (and glad I did) in Buenos Aires, who travels alone all over the world all the time and balances having doors opened with tending to open wounds while on a camel safari with five Maasai men and not a clinic in sight, this conversation confuses me. A lot.

I'm 63. Ex military. People are people the world over. Most are polite and kind. Each culture is unique and has its own challenges. Whether in Eqypt or Argentina, Croatia or Vietnam, it's up to me as the traveler to do my best to research enough so that I have some semblance of understanding of what to expect as a female traveling alone. Beyond that it's my attitude, my set of expectations, my inherent fears, and my biases that can get me in trouble or keep me out of them. If I travel smart- don't get drunk, accept drinks from strangers, go out late in the dark, all simple common sense procedures and more that I have followed these many years, I don't have a problem. If I walk around looking like a victim I will draw perps like flies. I have found in every country people who wish to help, to assist, to be of service, to leave me with a good feeling and wanting to return.

As for posters, my goodness, avrooster has helped me a number of times with trolls on this forum who have taken it upon themselves to attack me personally out of spite or to do damage out of their own fear. Frankly all I can say is use your own wisdom. Do your own research. Trust your own gut. It is unfortunate that on Fodors as in any other forum there are jerks, there are people who have nothing better to do than spoil others' joy rather than add value. While unfortunate, you have to pick and choose whose posts you read. When someone adds information, education, support and advice, take it in. When something makes your gut twist, ignore it. As in, as you note above, fear mongering. That's their issue, not yours. The more I travel, the more I find the world to be a welcoming and extraordinary place. If you feel fear, you will project fear out onto the world. If you feel confident and happy, you will embrace it. Avrooster and mlgb and crellston and many, many other posters on here are great advocates who wish to expand our universes. Those are who to listen to, for what it's worth.

SambaChula chimed in on a thread of mine about Cuba and I found the suggestions most useful about music history. Where posts add value, challenge our thinking, make us consider options and ideas, they are useful. Fodor's has plenty of reading about how to travel safe as a single women. No need to repeat it here.

If anyone has questions about credentials here or anywhere, most folks can be researched. Avrooster and crellston and mlgb and the like have long, long histories. As I said I sought M. Rooster and consider him a friend, and strongly recommend anyone else traveling to BsAs to do the same. That includes single females.

Hope that helps, and I agree- lets' get back to discussing countries. For my part, I am off to Cuba in a few days. And to Avrooster to answer your question, it might be a while before I get back down your way but my friends in Bariloche are agitating, and I really really really miss Dos Hermanos. So you never know......

Good grief, it appears that this got way out of hand.

To report back, I had two days and one night at the Iguazu Sheraton and wished it had been two nights. The hotel was a wonderful lux respite after my (also wonderful) Antarctica cruise. And I loved the national park - I walked almost every trail, spent lots of time in/near the falls watching the rainbows and the swifts. Spotted lots of rain forest critters. I was not interested in the boat rides and certainly not the helicopters. Nature kept me contentedly entertained. Oh, the butterflies!
