Best areas to stay in Montevideo?

Can you suggest the best places to stay in Monte and if you know of any little gem guesthouses?

Are there any areas of Monte we should avoid that are still unsafe?

I might like to stay in Pocitos. THis is an area in between downtown and Carrasco. It all depends what you are looking for. I am not familiar with guest houses. Sorry.

We decided on Pocitos and we've booked Punta Trouville apart (a hotel). There was an article in the NY Times a couple of weeks ago (36 hours in Montevideo) and they were recommending that area. I was originally thinking we'd stay downtown, but the article made the point that downtown can be charming by day, but not so nice at night.

Can't help you with guesthouse as we did not choose wisely! We arrived at the bus station to be told that there was convention in town and all rooms were booked. We found a place at Casa Amor (Love house?!). We had a very "interesting experience - for more info on this and Monte have at look at our blog:

In Colonia we stayed at Viajero B&B which was very nice and reasonably priced. They do have a place in Monte and I would seriously consider it. http://www.elviajeromontevideo.com/r...eo/booknow.php

You can also book via www.hostelworld.com

I can't say that I felt unsafe at any time in Montevideo but all the usual precautions should be observed. Do try and make it to Colonia if you can lots to see..
