2 nights in Santiago - or should it be Valparaiso?

We arrive in Santiago from Atlanta the morning of October 30, and need to be in Valparaiso for the cruise on Nov 1. Should we go straight to Valparaiso, or spend the first night in Santiago - the Hotel Orly seems to be a favorite. We are an active 65yr old couple, we like walking but won't do the aerial tram! Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Didn't spend much time in Santiago but we loved Valparaiso so that would be my choice. Lots of walking to do. A link to our time there:

Is there any way you change your flights to arrive earlier? Both cities deserve a few days. Parked outside of the hotels in Santiago there are always private drivers assigned to the hotel. Hire a driver to take you to around the city to see the sightsa Moneda, the 400 year old Iglesia San Francisco, Fish Market, etc. Drivers are very very inexpensive..
Re:aerial tram..We had our driver take us to the top.
You can book a walking tour of Valparaiso's historic hills. Darwin's Trails is one company.

I forgot to ask how best to get to Valparaiso from Santiago - we don't mind renting a car, but hate to have to pay drop-off charges! Also is there a must-see on the way? Unfortunately we cannot change our flight... Will try and find Darwin's Trails website.

YOu drive through the Casablanca Valley vineyards en route to Valparaiso. Google that you will see the names. Morande has a lovely restaurant and Matetec is worth the drive off the main road and also has an excellent reataurant. We had car for a week that we picked up and dropped off in Santiago but I think it would be worth a drop off charge to see some of Chile's famous wineries.

Happy, I'm curious about the drivers. It sounds like a really good idea, but could you give me an idea of what you mean by inexpensive. I'm travelling on my own and I'm on a budget. I would love to do this, as I only have 1 day in Santiago. I then have 2 days in Valparaiso.

It's only an hour and a half on the bus from Santiago to Valparaiso.
