I am visiting Buenos Aires in September. Would you reciommed staying the the Recoleta or Palermo Soho area? Or another area? What hotels would you recommend?

Are you interested in staying in a boutique hotel in a trendy neighborhood with lots of bars, clubs and shops or in a neighborhood with Embassies, parks and more upscale hotels ?

Deciding on neighborhoods is hard, it depends on your style/taste.
We liked Recoleta when we visited, we stayed in Recoleta because there are so many museums, parks, the Cemetery and people said it was safe... some of the best hotels in the city are in Recoleta .. The Hyatt , The Alvear and The Four Seasons.

Palermo Soho is just a part of the huge barrio of Palermo .. you will be in or next to Viejo and Hollywood too .. Do some reading on the different barrios and see which appeals to your style ..

Scarlett is right, they are 2 different neighborhoods. Recoleta is more centrally located, it's within walking distance to the main spots of the city like the Microcentro, Barrio Norte, or some interesting spots in Palermo, such as the MALBA Museum. Regarding safety, you should be careful in any neighborhood in our city, but it's absolutely true that these are safer than staying in San Telmo, for example.

The recommendations would also depend on your budget. What category of hotel are you thinking of?

I found Ayres de Palermo to be a great value and great location in Palermo Soho for around $115US per night as of Dec 2008. It's sort of like an execu-stay type of place with a kitchenette and there is a small pool in the courtyard. Breakfast was included. It's walking distance from at least 2 metro stops, a large mall and a Carrefour. 15-20 min walking to Recoleta if you are in decent shape. Easy to catch a cab. More of a neighborhood area with shops and dining, which is what we happen to prefer. I noticed Dazzler Suites Juncal was about a block or 2 away in the same nice area and had considered that one too. Looked nice, but I did not go inside. Recoleta does not have metro access. The large chain hotels were in very commercial and more touristy areas, and very expensive for our tastes and we were glad we avoided them once we saw where they were. Good luck!

In Recoleta there is also Meliá Recoleta hotel, a nice boutique hotel. And in Palermo there is the Glu hotel.
Another option would be the Argenta Tower but this is located nearer to the Plaza San Martín, a very nice neighborhood though. Other hotels around this last area Loi Suites Arenales (4 star) or Sofitel Arroyo (5 star)

drdawggy -

Tried to "catch you" on some other threads but no responses so Im trying one you recently posted on. Since you cant send a message right to a user, I didnt know another way. I apologize to the thread

Found a couple of apartments I like - which "neighborhood" would you recommend between the two? We obviously want "safe" and not too crazy noisy where we cant sleep - but want to be near things (especially shopping ).

1) Brand new apartment: Cabrea and Gascon
2) aparment with very nice terrace : Guatemala and Arevalo

Thank you!
