I'm travelling to New York for the first time in April and need a restaurant recommendation for a 25th wedding anniversary dinner. Price not critical, but memory is!

One If By Land, Two If By Sea is the "most romantic" restaurant in New York, and it deserves the accolade.

Call early for a reservation, and be sure to mention the special occasion.

I would direct you to Chanterelle, Danube, Jean-Georges or Daniel.

If you want something much more intimate than One If By Land...., then think about La Grenouille on E. 52nd St. Classic french cuisine in beautiful, flower filled room. As it is significantly smaller than One if by land..., it presents a much more romantic and refined environment. If price isn't an issue, then you'll have a hard time finding a better spot.

I second La Grenouille. It's magical.

Do you really mean that price is not critical. Some of the suggestions could cost a couple hundred dollars or more for the two of you.

You do have lots of good suggestions - but if you're celebrating 25 yeears of marriage - that means you're probably more a mature, "seasoned" diner. A quiet, sophisticated atmosphere will probably be more appealing. Restaurants fitting that bill would include Chanterelle, Scalini Fedeli, Gotham Bar and Grill, Cafe Des Artistes, Aquavit, Aureole and River cafe. All have excellent food- all will run around $75 - 100 per person. A less expensive, but beautifully romantic alternative might be Erminia, or King's Carriage. Good luck - and tell us what you choose!

Agree with Cafe des Artisties - we go there often for special events. Grenouille is very pretty - but for me its a little too much for the "ladies who lunch".

Thanks for the advice, the short-list seems to be La Grenouille, One if by land and Daniels, looking at the websites (not a great indicator I know)Daniels looks a bit "corporate". Anyway, it's a nice problem to have!

I've often gushed about LaGrenouille here. It is a wonderful restaurant and it is gratefully not on the A list with the NY type foodie that disdains anything but the latest hot restaurant.

Flowers are stunning and the focus of this simple decor. Years ago when I was just learning about French cuisine I booked lunch with a group of fellow workers who were in town for market. They did not know from FFF (fine french food) and one was pregnant. When she ordered a glass of milk with lunch there was no rolling of eyes from the headwaiter but shortly a busboy exited the front door and shortly returned with a tell tale quart of skim milk. (no skim milk in a traditional kitchen). That simple act of making everyone welcome has stayed with me through the years in contrast to the snearing headwaiters at some places and the sullen things that wait table in some of the trendier places.

La Grenouille would be a great choice.
