Hollywood Breakfast / Monterey Dinner ?'s

I'm looking for suggestions on breakfast in Hollywood and dinner in Monterey and no NOT in the same day LOL.

We will be staying at the Magic Castle in Hollywood 1 night and plan to walk around that area in the morning ... any recommendations for breakfast?

For Monterey ... we only have 1 night there (at the Marriott), May 29th. This is a holiday weekend and we are not sure what time we will be arriving as we are driving up the coast. Any suggestions for good seafood dinner on holiday weekend without reservations? Maybe we should just plan on room service?

There's the Hollywood/Vine Diner. It's a new spot in an historic building. I am told the food is good. It's an attractive spot. You could walk there.

Are you limited to places you can walk to?

We have a place in PB and belive me for that weekend you must have reservations unless you do not mind waiting a while to eat your dinner.

I notice that the 29th falls on a Sat. Anytime you visit you need to get a reservation for a Sat.night.

Again, I am thinking you want something nice or special?

If not, no worries.

Drive carefully, you will be sharing the beautiful and amazing California Coast with MANY others.

Alas, one night in M should not include room service.

Happy Planning,

OaktownTraveler ... can you suggest any casual places for seafood where we might get in after say an hours wait at the most? Not looking for anything fancy/dressy after a long day driving up the coast. Hmmm ... maybe I should just go ahead and make late reservations somewhere ... if I do that what are your suggestions for casual seafood?

Darn, I was going to say Barney's Beanery for breakfast, but that's in West Hollywood; or the Airstream Diner in Beverly Hills. Never mind.

For Monterey, I wouldn't advise room service at the Marriott, because it is painfully expensive and the food is, imo, nothing to write home about. From the Marriott, you can walk to the Wharf (across the street from the hotel) and go to Domenico's for good seafood. Although they take reservations, they also take walk-ins with a wait. You can dress in jeans or dress up if you prefer (we've done both, but mostly jeans).

A great fish place is the Monterey Fish House on Del Monte, but you have to drive to get there. Del Monte is off Calle Principal, the street the Marriott is on, so you just drive down the street 10 minutes to get there. You will need reservations, but it's all locals, unlike Domenico's.

Also, Passionfish in Pacific Grove is great for fresh seafood, and they charge you for wine THEIR COST, and they have a good variety.

Have fun!

Try Nate N Als in Beverly Hills. Nothing fancy but they have great breakfasts and the customers are great for people watching.

Funnell Cakes at Musso and Frank's on Hollywood Blvd. A little pricey but a classic.

I highly recommend a trip to Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles on North Gower. It's a Hollywood institution that shouldn't be missed. Granted it's not low cal or cholesterol free, but one time won't hurt. Every now and then you can spot a celeb there if you're interested in that. The #13 is a whole chicken breast that sits on top of a maple soaked waffle. The #2 is a 1/4 chicken with onions and gravy, waffle on the side. I know it sounds like a disgusting combination, but it's not. You can also order just waffles or egg and potato dishes that are equally as good. Also order the sunrise, a mix of orange juice and lemonade that somehow stays separated. Another suggestion is Mel's (50's style) diner on Sunset. Good breakfast and people watching on Sunset if you ask for a table by the front window or sit outside.

A lot of good suggestions, but some of these places you would have to drive to. If you want to be within walking distance of the hotel, there is a Hamburger Hamlet on Hollywood Blvd., Mel's Diner on Highland, Ammo (on Highland - a bit of a walk and brunch on weekends only I believe), Acapulco on Sunset does a nice Mexican brunch on Sunday. Of course, there is always the IHOP on Sunset, but there are so many other choices. If you have a car, there are lots of nice cafes in West Hollywood. Some of my choices would be Calfoutis, Kings Road Cafe, Swingers, Griddle Cafe or Hugo's. Enjoy your stay here in LA.

I recently met a friend for breakfast at Twist at the Renaissance Hotel at Hollywood and Highland. We normally meet at Mel's Diner, but she insisted I must try Twist. It was a most fabulous selection (asparagus and smoked salmon omelettes! Yum!).

I agree with Domenico's for seafood. We like the Monterey sand dabs there. Cafe Fina is also good. You can make a reservation online! Have a great time in Monterey! ***kim***
