Yes, Canal Street is very crowded. But if Sunday is the only day you can go there, you should by all means go. I go to Canal Street on Sundays a lot, and I don't think it is that much different than being in Times Square on a weekend.

I'm sure someone on this board will give you directions to go from LGA to Canal Street.
But I would strongly advice you not to go there with all your luggage. It is so crowded there that you will have a hard time navigating the sidewalks with luggage.
Also, maybe you find out more about what Canal Street is about before deciding to go. It might not interest you afterall.

There are several major streets that run east to west in Manhattan, and Canal St is one of them. It is kind of the dividing line between the downtown area and soho. One side of Canal St on the east side is Chinatown and on the north side is Little Italy.
Canal St. starting at Broadway and going east has tons of shopping, alot of stores that sell knockoffs of brand name purses and bags, watches and assorted touristy gifts. Also LOTS of jewelry stores in the area with good to great prices on gold and gems.
The weekend is the busiest time to be in the area, so know that there will be crowds and keep track of your wallet and purse, as they can dissapear easily in that area.
Most of the subway lines stop on on in the Canal St area. Check the map in the subway station.
Depending on where you are staying, Canal St is usually a few stop ride on the subway.
Have a great time while you are here.
