Rim to Rim / Phantom Ranch

Hi everyone! My partner and I are hoping to hike Rim to Rim and had our hearts set on staying at Phantom Ranch, but it looks like it’s booked solid. We were aiming for March of this year and don’t want to do it all in one day as we really want to take our time and truly enjoy the experience. I’m assuming Phantom Ranch is the only place to stay overnight other than camping, but would love any tips, alternatives, or advice for making this work!

The north rim is typically closed for the winter from mid October until May 15, limiting R2R hikes to just 5 mo of the year, and in practice to much less than that due to heat June-Sept. Lottery for PR opens up a year or more in advance so now is the time to start planning for 2027.

Another extreme ultra runner option is to go fast and light - R2R in a single day, carrying very little gear.

A third option is to camp, which requires a back country permit (lottery opens up 6mo ahead) and carrying a lot more gear, so you missed the spring 2026 window already.

I see that the Phantom Ranch lottery opens 15 months in advance of dates of stay so you may wish to consider putting in for the lottery for March of 2027. I see the South Rim mule rides are out of commission until the end of April due to trail conditions. There may be some North Rim mule rides but I don't believe they go all the way to Phantom Ranch (I may be incorrect about this.)

It's possible to take a guided trip with an outfitter, and be able to spend two nights at Phantom Ranch. I spoke with people doing that while I was on a couple backpacking trips in the Canyon about 10 years ago. The outfitters book up a significant portion of the availability, which is one reason it's tough for regular folks to get a reservation.

Consider going with these people, for example:

Staying at Phantom is definitely a highlight.

Nelson, I didn't know it was possible to take a trip with an outfitter. Good information!

I found this website: https://www.mtsobek.com/trips/north-...ing-4-day-2026. I have no idea about this company at all but thought you might be interested.

KTravel, Mountain Travel / Sobek is a long-established agency. When my wife and I were in Nepal in 1977, they were running treks to then newly opened areas. We didn't use them but I was aware of them, then continued to get their catalogs for several years. Somewhere along the line they merged with Sobek who were well known for wild river trips.

They are pricey but no doubt they'd provide a good trip.

After backpacking in the Grand Canyon a couple times, I tried for years throwing my hat into the Phantom Ranch lottery so I could get my wife down there without having to carry a heavy pack. Never had any luck, and now that ship has sailed. I should have just booked with an outfitter!

Super helpful, everyone. Since R2R doesn't open until May (and apparently North Rim is closed still due to the fires last year), I think we will shift to some Utah parks ie: Zion and Arches. I very much appreciate your responses and advice.

Check to see if reservations are necessary for either of these parks. Canyonlands is next door to Arches.
