Mexico City draft ideas
We will have 7 full days in Mexico city at the end of March. I think I have a pretty good idea of what we might want to do, but would love your thoughts and advice. We are staying at the St. Regis which is close to the Bosque de Chapultepec. priorities are art, history, food, gardens - some wandering in shops but not that big on partying or sports.
I figured day one while we adjust to altitude we would go to the castle/history museum in Chapultepec and then maybe another museum or just stroll (suggestions?). That night we have reservations at Pujol to celebrate my husband's 65th birthday!
the only other day so far that I have pinned down is on the Sat we want to go to San Angel to see the Estudio Rivera y Kahlo and then the street art fair in the two plazas.
other ideas: street food tour with club Tengo Hambre
tour to Teotihuacan
possible tours with uniMextours US/Mexican war or Jewish presence in Mexico
one day in Coyoacan to see Frida Kahlo house, Trotsky house and museo nacionales de las intervenciones
one or two days in centro historico - Templo Mayor, Casa de los azulejos - other suggestions of museums?
conflicted about xochimilco - the canals sound fun but not sure we would like the whole party boat thing. any suggestions of the best way to experience, or maybe just go to Parque National Desierto de los Leones.
I'm also thinking about trying to get another restaurant reservation Quintonil? for la comida and then just wander nice neighborhood or shops
It's our first time so we're trying to be realistic without really understanding distances. Any ideas or suggestions of museums or guides or restaurants you love would be very appreciated. Gracias!

Sounds like a great trip. As for museums I would highly recommend Museo Nacional de Antropologica. One of the world’s great museums, not just for the vast collection of exhibits, but also for its originality of the design of the actual building. You could probably spend a day there (though we allocate half a day. Palacio de Bellas Artes is also worth a look or even one of the folkloric ballet performances if that's your sort of thing.
Make sure to book Frida's house well in advance. It gets extremely crowded. Also worth a look is Palacio Nacional though do check opening times. You get tickets when it opens for that day though we turned up on two separate vistas only to find it closed!
On our first trip we used the subway a lot to get around. V. crowded but a viable option especially to get out to Coyacan and an Xochimilco. Re the latter. I very much wanted to visit on a Sunday but our nieces went there a few weeks before we arrived and looking at their instagram posts' decided that it wasn't worth the long journey to get there.
On our second trip we relied on Uber exclusively. It is cheap and in general , it worked well. There were a couple of occasions when we did get stuck in horrendous traffic. When coming back from lunch at Pujol to our hotel in Roma Norte , what should have taken 20 mins or so took over an hour. Google maps was accurate maybe 75% of the time but if you need to be somewhere time sensitive , I would double the estimate. Also, unlike many place where I have used Uber, once a ride had been accepted, it would ofter be 10-15 mins before they arrived. I soon learned to factor that in to my estimates.
The food and experience at Pujol was excellent. I would put it in our top five dining experiences ever! I booked seats at the bar rather than a table and upon reflection I was glad I did. Slightly more expensive but it was great to be able chat with the waiters throughout the meal. You are in for a treat!

Thanks so much Crellston. I'd meant to ask about advance tickets. Are there other sights besides the Frida Kahlo house where they are advisable? and thanks for the museum suggestions and advice about the travel times. Yikes. I have seen the Ballet Folklorico here many years ago. I'll look it up to see if they are performing while we are there. So many wonderful options.

Here are my thoughts
he only other day so far that I have pinned down is on the Sat we want to go to San Angel to see the Estudio Rivera y Kahlo and then the street art fair in the two plazas. --> must reserve in advance
tour to Teotihuacan --> sounds great
one or two days in centro historico - Templo Mayor, Casa de los azulejos - other suggestions of museums? --> I think a day is more than enough, Bellas artes is a must and if your interested, the ballet folklorico of Amalia Fernandez presentes there with typical mexican dances, it is an impressive show!
the post office (edificio de correos) is a beautiful building and a must see
About other museums, I think the Franz Meyer is very pretty
The Hotel Ciudad de Mexico is gorgeous and you can have a snack or drink in their terrace
Azul Historico would be a nice place to have lunch
conflicted about xochimilco - the canals sound fun but not sure we would like the whole party boat thing. any suggestions of the best way to experience, or maybe just go to Parque National Desierto de los Leones. --> I am not a big fan of Xochilmico never take anyone who comes to visit mexico city.
I'm also thinking about trying to get another restaurant reservation Quintonil? for la comida and then just wander nice neighborhood or shops --> We went to Quintonil last week and had a great time. Great food and had so much fun.
Museo Nacional of Antropologia is amazing, the arquíctecture is lovely and you can also watch the voladores the papantla when you finish (they are just outside the museum)
Hope this is helpful!

Another museum you might consider is the Soumaya in Polanco. The building itself is a piece of art and the collections are pretty interesting. As you are staying close to Chapultepec, Polanco is right above you. There are also two modern museums in Chapultepec park that are really good. They had been closed due to remodeling and Covid but I think they are both open now. We are going to CDMX in about 11 days, you are going to have a great time. Also as mentioned you have to go to the Anthropological Museum

All these ideas are great. Aililup, when you said must reserve in advance were you talking about the Rivera/Kahlo studio = I'm assuming the art fair is open air?
We have pinned down most of what we want to do but are debating allocating more time for museums, wandering, vs tour to Teotihuacan. What is the drive there like? I do love getting outside of the big cities and seeing the countryside.
Enjoy your trip Tdiddy - hope to read the trip report.

The drive to Teotihuacan is semi-urban I guess Id call it. You of course can do a Google Street view of the highway leading to the site. Not like out in the middle of a jungle like Palenque or El Tajin. So it didn't have that "Indiana Jones' ambiance like other archeological sites. Not saying it's not worth the visit. The restaurant La Gruta is a unique experience if you do go.
As far as Xochimilco being a party boat thing, if you go on a weekend you'll for sure see some of that. But you don't have to do so yourself in your boat. I thought it was a hoot, but won't ever go back. Plus it's quite a ways away from centro where we were staying at the time we visited.
