We've become quite taken with crossing on the Queen Mary 2 and scheduled another trip March 29. We've been assigned a cabin almost at the aft end of deck 5, only two cabins from the end of the corridor at the rear of the ship. On our last voyage we were located between stairways C and D on deck 5, considered mid-ship. We realize the walking distance for some things will be longer, but is there a difference in an "aft" or "mid ship" cabin that would cause us to seek a change? Movement, noise, traffic? We may be able to exchange for a mid ship cabin on decks 4 or 6, but have heard those decks may also have more chance for noise etc? We're not too particular but are not familiar with the mechanics of things and cabin location... if there is a big difference we may pursue an exchange. Thanks!

Look at the deck plan. For instance, On deck 6 you have a restaurant over you.

I agree to check on cruise critic. You can also just google search for "Queen Mary 2 5102" (or whatever your cabin # is) or "Queen Mary 2 deck 5" - that may pull up comments from others about that cabin - google often does a better job searching inside forums such as cruise critic (or fodors for that matter) then the site's own search.

Generally speaking, I would not think a restaurant above me would be an issue unless there was early morning noise, or evening hours were later than I wanted to retire in peace. A cabin above a night club on the other hand could be an issue late into the night....

I did a quick google search "QM2 deck 5 aft" and came up with this example...it was about balconies, but there is mention of interconnecting rooms may be louder, as well as reference to some engine noise. The latter doesn't bother me, but loud sounds through a connecting door would....

Thanks to all...for a very nominal $100 fee, we upgraded to the middle of deck 5. Although the aft cabin would likely be fine, given the choice it seemed wise to make the change and be comfortable with our assignment rather than worry about it or find an issue when we were settled in.

I'd like to know, in general, which area of the ship feels the most movement from the waves? (I like feeling this).

I'm not the world's greatest expert but as a veteran of more than a dozen cruises can tell you the answer is "it can vary" depending on size and age of the ship, whether or not you are on the lower or upper decks and, of course, sea & wind conditions at the time you are sailing. Generally speaking you'll feel more movement the further forward or aft and higher up you are. That said, larger ships tend to be more stable than smaller ships. Also to be considered, many newer ships have state of the art stabilization systems designed to reduce movement to a bare minimum.

In my experience forward cabins get the most up and down motion. Upper level cabins get more side to side movement. Lower and mid ship get the least motion.
