Frankfurt 9 hours layover-questions, questions

Hi all you fellow travellers, Where can we spend the day whilst in the airport awaiting a flight to Sardinia. Will have just flown in from Sydney via Singapore so will be looking to rest not sightsee. Will be flying with same airline so bags will be transferred by airline, hopefully. I see the Hilton Gardens is in the airport, is that correct? How do we get there? Do we have to go through customs etc? Any info will be very much appreciated. Many thanks.

"How do we get there?"

The hotel's website is very clear that it is connected to Terminal 1 via a covered walkway.

"Do we have to go through customs etc?"

Assuming this is on one ticket your bags will be checked through and you won't see them until Sardinia where you will go through Customs (that is the luggage bits). You will go through Immigration (that is the passport bit) at FRA.

Oh -- jeeze -- I goofed. Since you are going landside to the hotel yes, you will go through Customs in FRA (and again when you pick up your checked bags after the next flight). But don't worry, Customs is basically a formality - you walk through the "Nothing to Declare" door -- and that's it.

Question -- Which airline are you flying, and which class? Because LH has an Arrivals Lounge where you can relax and eat/drink/shower if you are flying in a premium cabin.

Thanks once again, so let me go back here, our main bags will be put on the next flight from FRA to Athens..Yes?? Without us having to pick them up and take them through cusomers ourselves??. We will only have carry ons then to take to the hotel for the time we are there, around 6 hours (?). Going through customs is what we are trying not to do, after long flight, as we are not flying 'premium' we are only cattle class this time.
Have trird to contact LH ref booking into their Lounge, but, they were very unhelpful, told us to book on line..could not get on to the site..then spoke wth a person who said do it at the airport..not always a viable situation as lounge could possibly be full by then..
Many thanks for your patience and assistance, I am a dinosur on all this,.
Cheers

If you are on LH or LH partner all the way then your bags will be checked to your final destination. You should confirm thats how they are tagged at your origin.

As janis noted going through customs is nothing more than walking out a door.. no wait …similar to exiting a supermarket but with fewer bags in tow. It’s the same process whether you have checked bags or carry on or no bags.

Waiting for baggage claim and then schlepping your bigger bags is what you are really trying to avoid.

In my experience trying to get into an LH lounge in FRA on just a steerage class ticket is futile, and their basic lounge is quite pedestrian and not a restful place.

I have no experience with this, but there is a My Cloud Transit hotel in the non-Schengen area of Terminal 1, @ the Z gates, where your flight from Singapore may arrive:
https://www.mycloud.de/en/home.html

Since you are arriving from a non-Schengen country, you might be eligible to use this.

That aside (and assuming lounges aren't an option), there are four hotels connected to Terminal 1 via an upper-level walkway - the Sheraton and Marriott are the closest to the terminal, and the Hilton and Hilton Garden Inn are just a few minutes further. We just did an overnight connection at Frankfurt about a month ago, coming from Egypt, and we stayed at the Sheraton. Because we were arriving from a non-Schengen country, we did have to go through passport control before exiting the terminal. Unfortunately we chose to collect our bags rather than thru-check them to United the next morning, and the baggage claim took forever. After exiting the baggage hall, the walk to the Sheraton was quick, <10 minutes.

Also, I agree with J62 that the Lufthansa Business Lounges aren't worth it, and the website says that there is currently no capacity in Frankfurt and Munich.

• Don't confuse Customs with Immigration. You will go through Immigration at FRA no matter what. That is where they check your passports and allow entry to the country or not. Queues at Immigration/Border Control can be long. Customs is where they check what you are bringing into the country - your luggage. You will not see your checked luggage at FRA since this is one booking. Normally - if you were staying inside security in the terminal you would not see Customs - but as we said, not a big issue since Customs is just walking through a door unless they pull you out for some reason.

• With no status and flying Economy you will not have access to an Arrivals Lounge so it is either 1) stay airside in the terminal or 2) go landside to the hotel. If you do go to the hotel you will go through security returning for your onward flight.
