Panama City - Ancon Hill - Gorgas Hospital trip planning help needed

I was born at Gorgas Hospital in 1959 while it was part of the US Canal Zone. Needless to say I have not been back since I was 3 years old. I'm thinking about suggesting a one week February/March vacation to friends. There are direct flights from Newark which would make for an easy journey. My problem is that I have no idea what we would do or where we would stay. We love warm beaches, sun, pools, good food, occaisonal touring etc. Can anyone suggest an itinerary or good lodging?

Seafox, I recently saw a posting on another board about Panama in which someone mentioned that he was also born in the Canal Zone. I'm sure you are aware, but you can declare your Panamanian citizenship for being born on Panama soil, if you so desire.

But to respond to your question, if you are staying in Panama City, there are many choices, but think of them as being in a large metropolitain city. Panama City itself is an impressive and beautiful downtown feel. To get some of "old Panama," consider staying in El Casco Viejo - the old city.

We loved the Canal House. It's lovely and the staff there is simply excellent. From there, you can take several daytrips to see the canal, etc.

Now for beaches, though, you'll have to get out of PC. Spend a few days in Panama City and then hop a domestic flight to Bocas del Toro and stay at the Garden of Eden Resort. There are other GREAT choices for a fun, funky stay, but Bocas del Toro will give you great choices for things to do.

Although I wasn't born in the Canal Zone, I went to high school there and lived in Quarry Heights. There is a very active board czbrats.com which has tons of Panama info.
On my last two trips back I stayed out at Amador most of the time in the Country Inn and Suites, but last night had to be at La Estancia in Quarry Heights. The Panama Vacation Quarters also in Quarry Heights is very popular with returning American visitors. Go, it is more beautiful and interesting than ever.
Panama me encanta.

Yes, since it's an easy flight from Newark - by all means go - even if only for a week. We always stay at La Estancia B&B in Quarry Heights mentioned by cmcfong. But staying in Casco Viejo would be interesting too. The canal is much more interesting than you all might imagine. If you get a chance read David McCullough's Path Between the Seas before you go.
It's a fascinating book about the construction of the canal (and believe me, I'm no engineer). With just a week I'd plan on doing day trips in and around PC - lots to do, the city, Gamboa. Guess there are also some beach resort type places you could overnight at that aren't too far . .. but I can't speak to those. We love Panama

Transiting the Panama Canal is a traveler’s must do adventure. The tour is amazing and I'm sure you'll feel proud of being born in Panama. Gorgas is now a center for scientific research.

P.S. I would recommend staying in El Cangrejo (not Casco Viejo save this for a day visit or clubs in the evening), El Cangrejo is a barrio in the middle of restaurants/cafe, super mercados, casino, clubs, etc. walking distance to all & a safe area. For those that know Panamá, this is the barrio where the El Panama Hotel is located, north of Via España, boundaried by Via Argentia & Frederico Boyd, Cathedral Carmen is on the corner of Via España y Frederico Boyd.

My father was a "Zonian" (my greatgrandfather went to Panama in 1907 to build the Canal, so I have a real draw to the place) so my husband and I took a trip there in Sept. 2010. We only had 5 nights so we moved fast. We took the redeye from LA and hit the ground running at 10am. We checked in at the Country Inn & Suites on the Amador Causeway. It isn't very Panamanian or charming, but the balcony view of the ships entering the Canal is quite a sight. We spent the day going around the old Canal Zone housing, the Administration Bldg. and other haunts my dad always talked about. We went to the American Cemetery where my grandparents are buried, etc. We walked the length of the Amador Causeway for dinner.(I don't recommend it....it's really long on a humid night) The next morning we drove to El Valle de Anton and did the zip line at Chorro El Macho. We were planning on having lunch in El Valle but there was such a heavy downpour, we couldn't even read the signs to know where to eat so we pushed on. In our original plan we were going to stay at Park Eden B&B in El Valle, but decided to drive on to the beaches of Azuero Peninsula since we only had 4 more nights. We had a great drive along the coast and then into Azuero to Pedasi. We stopped for some information about renting surfboards and had dinner at a great little place called Pedasito! that was owned by some developers in the area. Sadly, the area is turning into a suburb for expats, but they were nice and loaned my husband a surfboard. We had 2 nights reserved at Villa Marina in Playa Venao (Venado)where the good surfing is, and ended up liking it so much, we stayed a 3rd night. I have a short report and photos on trip advisor. We had dinner at the hotel one night when the rain was so heavy we couldn't see to drive; another night at El Sitio, just up the road in Venao. We went scuba diving with a great guide named Juan Carlos from Buzos de Azuero Pedasi Dive Shop. Our dives were off Iguana Island and Juan Carlos took us around the island during our sit time to show us the interesting plants, fruits and animals/birds there. He was a professor at the local college so he was really informative. We drove all the way back to Panama City for our last night, back at Country Inn, stopping at lots of little villages along the way - shopping for local crafts, etc. We ate at a roadside BBQ that was delicious - huge meal and drinks for total $10! We spent the evening in the city checking out the changes that have come - casinos, high rises, traffic. Then our last day was spent at Miraflores Locks and in Casco Viejo for lunch. We hired a cab driver who took us whereever we wanted to go and then on to the airport for our evening flight home - for a reasonable price, though I don't recall now what we paid. It was a whirlwind trip but we really felt we got a taste for Panama and some history of my family. We are thinking about going back next Christmas with our kids. We truly loved Panama and can't recommend it enough.
