B&B for 1 night between North Yorkshire & Northumberland

Hi to all...

I'm planning a trip to the UK in May 2008 and will be renting cottages in 2 areas (will have a rental car too)...Yorkshire & Northumberland for the 2 weeks and need to find a B&B for 1 night somewhere between the 2 locations and was hopping someone could recommend one they have stayed in and enjoyed. There will only be 2 of us for this one night, (Mom & daughter) so one twin bedded room with ensuite would be perfect. This will be our first time in Yorkshire and the cottage is located in the village of Hinderwell in North Yorkshire and is a Friday to Friday let. From there we will drive to our next cottage destination which is a Saturday to Saturday let located at Ingram in the Breamish Valley, on the edge of the Northumberland National Park. We have been to this area once before and so enjoyed it that we decided to go back and see more of it. Since we have the extra day and will be in no real hurry, is there a quaint little town/village along the way that one might recommend? My first thought was to just make the drive on Friday up to Northumberland and stay somewhere close to that cottage, but, I thought I'd see if there is an area along the way that we may not get to from either location that would be of interest.

Thanks so much in advance for any suggestions!!!

I think Hadrian's Wall would be worthy of a visit. And by heading west towards Corbridge and Hexham, you could avoid the Newcastle conurbation.

I have stayed at the Hayes in Corbridge, http://www.hayes-corbridge.co.uk/ Beautiful, comfortable B&B. Breakfast was somewhat disappointing, but the bedroom part was great.

LOVE North Yorkshire and Northumberland! My favourite parts of England.

We stayed at http://www.oakwoodcottage.com/ near Hexham, near Hadrian's Wall, in July. It has only one room, very quiet, fabulous breakfast, great location. Loved it. A 4 star for 25 pppn.

Oops - realize now that you are looking for a twin room. The following are B&B's we looked into while researching the trip:

http://www.yellowhousebandb.co.uk/index.html
http://www.dilstonplains.co.uk/index.htm
http://www.peth-head-cottage.co.uk/Contact_us.html
http://www.broomleyfell.co.uk/

My favourite villages in that region are Corbridge, Blanchland and Romaldkirk (voted the prettiest village in England).

I agree tha somewhere along Hadrian's Wall would normally be a good stopover. But no doubt you will make a day trip or two to the Wall during your wekk at Ingram.

Since both cottages are in quite rural locations - I'd personally spent the spare night in Durham. The Cathedral is absolutely magnificent.

Thank-you ron, travel2live2, & janisj...
I have checked out all the links you have posted and they all look wonderful and will pass this info along! Hadrians Wall is one of the reason's we have decided to return to Northumberland as we were not able to get to it the first time around, so making the time to do so this time around is at the top of our list!!

In Durham we stayed at Farnley Tower hotel, really a nice B&B on "The Avenue". For a place between Newcastle and Carlisle I liked my stay at Ashcroft Guest house in the nice village of Haltwhistle.

I dug out a recent survey of 50 best British B&Bs (Independant 4th August); the ones they are recommending in your area(and they do sound fabulous) are as follows:
No 4 Duke of Wellington, Danby North Yorks from 35pound;
No 8 Victoria Inn, Durham from 45pound;
No 19 Low Penhowe, Malton North Yorks from 60pound;
No 37 Landsdown House, Morpeth Northumberland from 40pound.
There are others which I can list if needbe, I have a book on Country Inns and B&B with some lovely recommendations and can pick out a few.
Good luck
Steve

We stayed at Millgate House in Richmond and loved it. It gets rave reviews on www.tripadvisor.com. Richmond is an interesting little town: castle, nice market place, old Georgian theatre, walks to river.

Thank-you so much for the link to Ashcroft Guest House bigtyke! Boy...there are certainly a bunch of wonderful options for us to look into!! Someone on TripAdvisor suggested driving to our Northumberland destination via the North Pennines (Pennine Way) and that also looks to be right up our alley!! They also gave a link to a B&B along the way called The Yew Tree Chapel...

http://www.yewtreechapel.co.uk/

just another place that looks oh so inviting!!

You or anyone here ever hear of this place?? Just curious!

Okay, so I think we have decided on a B&B...Landsdown House in Morpeth! As it turns out, the owner of the cottage we are renting for our week in North Yorkshire is friends with the owner of this B&B and called them. Thank-you to all who gave their opinions and advice. It is truly all very much appreciated!

Will get to Durham Cathedral too!!!

Of course I will be back for more input as I start to add more things to our list of things to do and places to visit!!
