Island eats : strange food names in the Caribbean
Hey all, time for some summer
fun!
Anybody know what "Run down" is? or how about "<font color="blue">Blue</font> Drawers"?
Have any other strange/funny named Caribbean Foods that you love?

ej,
Run Down is a mackerel dish ...kind of like a mackerel stew of sorts.
Blue Drawers is a green banana-based boiled "pudding". It's wrapped in a banana leaf and is really really good. They have something similar in Belize, but the name escapes me at the moment. Other names for it : "Tie leaf" or "Duckunoo".
Gizzarda...if you've ever been to Jamaica you must have had gizzarda! It's a coconut pastry that is soooo yummy!!!
Stinky/stinking toes : that's a fruit that has the worst smell ever imaginable! I cannot understand to this day why anyone would eat it! But some do and love it! I feel the same about Jack Fruit btw Tiverton!
Janga...I have no idea...nor do I know about pink tops.

I think it might actually be gizzada!
It's shredded coconut with brown sugar, mixed spices in a pastry shell.
Here's a picture at the bottom of the page at this link: It's the one in the pastry shell.

Mannish water is like hydraulic -- a hearty mucilagenous stew of Irish potato, carrot, escallion, seasonings and the jawbone of a goat. It's served
often at weddings or nine-nights/wakes.
Rundown can be any boiled down stew
(called OILDOWN in Southern Caribbean)
generally with kingfish/mackerel but often with veg and coconut milk.
Pink tops are like Jamaican Hostess
Twinkies/coconut cake squares with bright pink supersweet frosting.
Janga is a river mollusc from Port
Antonio area sometimes also called
river shrimp.
Blue drawers is a sweetened pone of coconut and cornmeal wrapped in banana leaf which imparts a blue coloring
when steamed.
