Oahu or Maui? First trip away without kids
My husband and I are planning our first trip away since having kids and I can't figure out where to go.
We would love to be able to get up in the morning and walk to the beach (Not looking for Waikiki-type beach) and then walk to a local restaurant for breakfast. We don't mind driving (especially since we won't have our car-sickness prone child!!) to attactions/activities. Then be close-enough to some great restaurants for a nice dinner and drinks.
So I think I'm looking for a smaller town, on really any island, which would accomodate those things....any suggestions??

Kailua on Oahu would be a nice area away from Waikiki.
Here is a thread that has some Oahu info including a list of things to do.

For Maui this is a great website:

I was at both places a long time ago, and we are going again with kids this year to Hawaii.
Oahu was an action island with lots to do. If you want privacy, I would opt for Maui. You can fly directly there from some US cities. Maui had a much more resort and relax feel to me. We are going to Oahu and Kauai this time. Kauai is supposedly beautiful. This sounds to me to be the most peaceful and beautiful of all the islands. I would think about Kauai.

Between Oahu and Maui, the choice is easily Oahu for us, without question. Many more options of things to do and see, restaurants, etc. Kailua would be nice to stay in, anywhere on the North Shore. Just a gorgeous island with so many things to offer. It has everything you'd want in a Hawaiian island, with the exception of lava!

I'd choose Maui. While I personally love Oahu, I think Maui is more what people expect when they think of "Hawaii" like in the movies. That said, this impression is most likely because I spend my time in Honolulu, while on Maui I got out and around the island quite a bit more.
