Overnight stay about 2 hours form Frankfurt-?Steinau an der Strasse?-Harzer!
Planning trip to Quedlinburg, Harz Mountain area/former East Germany world heritage city + Bamberg, either later this month OR September. ? Train Frankfurt to Q'burg is 5.5 hours--too long for me with all changes after an overnight (sleepless) plane trip.
Where to stay about 2 hours from Frankfurt on way to Q'Burg?
Small town with a few quaint sites, won't be up for much but nap/stroll/dinner/overnight before moving on.
Heard some good things about Steinau an der Strasse, brothers Grimm ?birthplace.
Anyone with experience of this town or suggesting another?

Well, how about Goslar on the western edge of the Harz? I am pretty sure there is a train connection to Goslar, but I will look it up now and get back to you - and keep my fingers crossed it is not more than two rail hours away!

Oops, sorry about that, Goslar is at best three and a half hours from Frankfurt airport.
A town I can unreservedly recommend is the university town of Marburg, around 90 minutes due north of Frankfurt, with quite frequent train connections.
And a nice three-star hotel is the Waldecker Hof at No 23 in the street in front of the station called Bahnhofstrasse.
Another town in the fairy-tale area is Alsfeld somewhat east and south of Marburg and even closer to Frankfurt. Again I don't know it from experience, this is not my part of the country.
When you are in the Harz try not to miss Goslar, at the western end. And try to get up to the Brocken - there is a mini-rail line up from Wernigerode - or you can walk!
Enjoy!

One of the most scenic towns in the Weser Highland Region is Hann.Münden. The town offers more than 700 half-timbered houses which were built over a period of six centuries. The train ride from FRA takes only about 2.5 hrs.
My overnight recommodation in Q-burg is the hotel "Zur goldenen Sonne".

I would agree with either Marburg or Hann-Munden as good overnight stops on your way to the Harz.
Both are lovely, interesting towns.
The old town of Marburg sits on a good sized hill and will take more energy than Hann-Munden to navigate.
If you decide to visit Hann-Munden, you could possibly end up being disappointed when you get to Quedlinburg. We were there in late April, and the old town streets were littered with debris, and there was much infra-structure work going on in the historic center.
Actually, my husband and I agreed that Quedlinburg disappointed. We jointly said ---"Is this all there is ?" We have wanted to go to Quedlinburg for many years and it didn't live up to our expectations.
We definitely enjoyed Wernigerode (20 miles west) more so than Quedlinburg.
It has an interesting, well-kept center and a great castle to explore on the hill overlooking the town.
Don't be surprised at the large number of unrestored, dilapitated buildings in the center of Quedlinburg----They need a huge infusion of cash to restore the glory that once was.
We did "day trips" to Marburg, Hann-Muenden, and Wernigerode---so I have no "first-hand" hotel recommendations to offer for these towns.
In Quedlinburg, we stayed at the Hotel Theophano on the main square and it was overpriced for the quality of the room (nothing like their pictures on the internet).
