Turkey Travel Recommendations

Hello to all. I am in the planning stages of a vacation trip to Turkey. Of course, there will be time spent in Istanbul. However, I’m reaching out to learn about other destinations worth exploring, including day trips from Istanbul. I am planning my solo trip for late October 2026. I anticipate at least 8 days on the ground in Turkey. Note: I am 74 years of age, and an energetic 74. I enjoy walking and exploring. Also, some websites suggest Cappadocia, but it doesn’t interest me. I like architecture, historical sites, churches or places of worship, and, of course, food ventures. Thank you for any feedback and your kind attention to my request.

With only 8 days on the ground, youl will need to be selective!

Ephesus comes to mind as an obvious choice given your interests, but there are lots of other options. If you haven't already consulted it, the Moon Guide is excellent. And you might find some useful information in my old trip report:

As you have not much ime, you may fly to Izmir and visit Ephesos (train station Selcuk), Aphrodisias (train station Nazilli), Pamukkale/Hierpolis (train station Denizli), all by train from Izmir airport and then fly back from Denizli DNZ to Istanbul.)

If I were visiting Turkey for the first time and my main interests were history, architecture, religious sites, local culture, food, and exploring on foot, these would be my top choices: 1. Istanbul (0 km)Without question, Istanbul would be my first choice. It was the capital of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires. You can visit Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, the Basilica Cistern, the Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar, all within the same city. Few places in the world offer such a concentration of history spanning nearly 2,000 years. 2. Izmir (approximately 480 km from Istanbul)Not only for the city itself but also for its surroundings. Nearby are Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary, and Pergamon, some of the most important archaeological and early Christian sites in the Mediterranean world. 3. Bursa (approximately 155 km from Istanbul)Often overlooked by foreign visitors. As the first capital of the Ottoman Empire, Bursa offers beautiful mosques, tombs, historic markets, and traditional neighborhoods. It feels like a quieter and more authentic version of old Ottoman Turkey. 4. Edirne (approximately 240 km from Istanbul)A paradise for architecture lovers. The Selimiye Mosque is considered one of the masterpieces of Ottoman architecture. The city also reflects the cultural influence of the Balkans. 5. Antalya (approximately 700 km from Istanbul)While famous for its beaches, Antalya is also rich in history. Nearby are Perge, Aspendos, and Side, where you can explore remarkably preserved Roman ruins and ancient cities. 6. Mardin (approximately 1,400 km from Istanbul)One of the most unique cities in Turkey. With its stone architecture, Syriac monasteries, narrow streets, and views over Mesopotamia, it feels like stepping into another civilization. 7. Safranbolu (approximately 410 km from Istanbul)A beautifully preserved Ottoman town with traditional wooden houses, cobbled streets, and a charming historical atmosphere. For someone interested in history and architecture, my ideal route would be: Istanbul → Bursa → Edirne → Izmir (Ephesus & Pergamon) → Mardin This route combines Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Christian, and Islamic heritage in a way that very few countries can offer.
