Japan Chubo Region Itinerary

Looking for feedback on a possible itinerary for a May 2027 trip. This is about the limit of time I can take off from work, so adding a day to anywhere would mean removing a day from somewhere else. All travel will be done by public transit. This will be my second trip to Japan, and I've done a lot of research to choose the locations in this itinerary, so I'm mostly looking for advice on whether or not the flow of the trip works. My main interests are culture, architecture, food, and nature. I'm a solo traveler, so I don't like to get too far off the beaten path, especially when it comes to hiking. Knock on wood, but I don't tend to be affected too badly from jetlag.

Matsumoto (4)
Hirayu Onsen (2)
Takayama (5)
Gero Onsen (2)
Kanazawa (4)
Tokyo (3)

More detailed version:
Day 1: Arrive Tokyo, travel to Matsumoto
Day 2: Matsumoto
Day 3: Matsumoto (Narai-juku day trip)
Day 4: Matsumoto (Kamikochi day trip)
Day 5: Travel to Hirayu Onsen
Day 6: Hirayu Onsen (Shinhotaka Ropeway)
Day 7: Travel to Takayama
Day 8: Takayama
Day 9: Takayama (Gujo Hachiman day trip)
Day 10: Takayama
Day 11: Takayama (Shirakawa-go day trip)
Day 12: Travel to Gero Onsen
Day 13: Gero Onsen
Day 14: Travel to Kanazawa
Day 15: Kanazawa
Day 16: Kanazawa
Day 17: Kanazawa
Day 18: Travel to Tokyo
Day 19: Tokyo
Day 20: Tokyo
Day 21: Travel Home

Looks good, though Day 1 could be tough, even if you don't feel the jet lag or travel fatigue. Time consuming with multiple transfers. It might not be feasible due to arrival time. You might do better by staying in Shinjuku the first night and getting the Super Azusa the next morning.

Other airports to consider are Nagoya Chubu (NGO), Toyama (TOY) and Komatsu (KMQ). Using NGO or TOY would likely rearrange the order of your stays.

KMQ is the airport for Kanazawa (though TOY could reasonably serve the same purpose, e.g I flew from Seoul to Toyama and then took JR to get to Kanazawa). On another trip Komatsu airport was pretty easy to use. There is a bus, but KimJapan picked me up and it was not a long drive to Kanazawa.

My main thought is to move the Tokyo time to the beginning. Look for an open-jaw/multicity trip flying to Tokyo and home from KMQ (preferred) or from TOY. Alternatively, take the shinkansen to Tokyo and maybe go on to the airport to spend the night before your flight. Or fly the night before or, possibly on Day 21 (on a separate ticket).

You could visit Shirakawago on the way to Kanazawa. Certainly, by bus from Takayama but also (am fairly certain) by bus from Gero (which might or might not go via Takayama).

Just checked: rome2rio says it would be a bus transfer at Takayama. Might as well take JR and then bus.

mrwunrfl Thank you! I was thinking Tokyo needed to be at the end because of the shopping I want to do there, but upon further thought, I'm sure I can get the cosmetic products I want in Kanazawa, and the stationery stores I want to visit in Tokyo won't add too much to my luggage.

I'm planning to book flights with points, so in a few more months, I should be better able to play around with airport options and timelines for arrival and departure.

To clarify, was your last suggestion to take JR between Gero Onsen and Takayama and then bus to Shirakawago? I will play around with that.

If you shop in Tokyo at the beginning, then you could send your purchases to the departure airport or Kanazawa hotel. Put in a duffel or box and takkyubin. Could send home via Japan Post. That's just some thoughts. You have it figured out.

>> flights with points
Which airline partnership? Star Alliance would have connections via Seoul for TOY and KMQ (maybe not via TYO). That is IME. I like Asiana.

Yes, I was suggesting JR from Gero to Takayama (local or limited express) and then bus from T to S-go and another bus from S-go to Kanazawa. Would want to reserve the bus seats in advance.

For Gero to Kanazawa you would have a couple of transfers (Nagoya and Tsuruga). Maybe three: Nagoya, Maibara, and Tsuruga. The trip is not as complicated as it sounds. Makes me think that it might be a good idea for an enroute side-trip from Maibara to visit the very fine castle in Hikone.

You prolly know that is a hard G in Gero, like in "get".

Of course, you would have no luggage to deal with if you day-tripped to Shirakawago.

The day before you leave Gero you could ship luggage to Kanazawa, On the day you leave Gero you could ship luggage to arrive the day after you arrive in Kanazawa. Definitely check to be sure you would get next-day delivery.

Shipping from Takayama would work the same/

Nice lineup. The Japan Alps in May are gorgeous.

Kamikochi opens late April, so you'll catch it early season. Main valley trails (Taisho Pond to Kappa Bridge to Yokoo) should be clear, but higher routes can still have snow. Pack layers - morning temps hit 4°C, afternoons around 16°C. Bring a down jacket.

Takayama city itself is 1-2 days (old town, morning markets, Hida Folk Village). Five days works if you're using it as a base. Shirakawa-go and Gujo Hachiman are both easy day trips from there. Hida Furukawa is another option - 15 minutes by train, quieter than Takayama but similar vibe.

On the two onsens: Hirayu is rugged mountain onsen with Alps views, perfect since you're doing Kamikochi. Gero is one of Japan's "Three Famous Hot Springs" - bigger town, more polished, classic onsen experience. Both good if you love onsen. If you need to cut one, pick by vibe: Hirayu for nature, Gero for traditional town.

Kanazawa's core (Kenroku-en, castle, geisha/samurai districts) takes 2 days. With 4 you could add a gold leaf workshop (that's the local craft), the 21st Century Museum, or day-trip to Shirakawa-go if you didn't hit it from Takayama. Noto Peninsula is another day trip option but it's a full day.

Gujo Hachiman is about 70 minutes from Takayama by bus. Known for summer dance festivals (July-September), so May is quieter. Castle and water features are nice but not essential.

If you flip Tokyo to the start like mrwunrfl suggested: fly into Narita/Haneda, do Tokyo, then Matsumoto → Alps → Kanazawa, fly home from Komatsu. Cuts the backtrack.
