My Itinerary is so Stuffy!

May 2026 we have 17 days in England. My itinerary is below. It sounds a bit stuffy to me. Very civilized.
Can someone suggest how to relax that "vibe" a little?

London - 5 days
  • Inns of Court tour - lawyer-led + lunch at Middle Temple Hall
  • Visit to Twinings - 1 hour
  • Mayfair - 1 day
  • Harrod's - 1 afternoon
  • Evensong at Westminster Abbey
  • Tour Westminster Abbey
  • 1/2 day in Hyde Park
Biggleswade - 2 nights
  • Old Warden air show
Cambridge - 4 nights
  • Usual Cambridge stuff + 1 day in Ely
Stamford - 4 nights (kind of slow travel thing - just calm ambling about town)
  • Staying in the Toll House over the river for 4 nights
  • Burghley house

Just quick -- I cannot imagine (ever) spending a day 'touring' Mayfair. Now, afternoon tea or cocktails in one of the super posh hotels, or very high end shopping - sure. But sightseeing - uh, no.

Harrod's - why? (And I do actually visit the store now and then but only to go to a specific boutique or department) But even IF one goes there - a whole afternoon??

There are sooooooo many ways you could loosen up your London plans.

And four days in Stamford -- that is slower than 'slow travel'.

Can you maybe suggest something in London that might loosen up the itinerary?

It's London! One has to try really hard to make it stuffy. Not trying to be snarky, honest.

Have you been to London before? (If this is your first visit that does seem a strange list. If you have visited previously, what have you already seen/done? )

How many full days do you have in the city?

I guess you must be high end shoppers with a lot of things to buy to spend a day in Mayfair and an afternoon in Harrods. Also why a half day in Hyde Park? I also am not sure why you are spending 4 nights in Cambridge. Bear in mind that the Tripos start in late May during which time the Colleges may be closed to outside visitors.

Go to the theatre. Get a boat down the Thames to Greenwich and the Thames barriers. Do a guided walk with London Walks. I'd skip Harrods. If the things on your list are things you want to do, who cares if it's stuffy? It's your trip, do what pleases you.

I did a Fashion/History focused walking tour of Mayfair a couple of years ago-it was fascinating.

That tour sounds like something my wife would like - is that tour still "going"?

Can you work in some contemporary art? Tate Modern, perhaps? Just to challenge the very 'establishment' look of your itinerary?

Stuffy or not, if this is what you enjoy, then do it. For me, I love museums, and have spent much more time in them (including London's wealth of smaller museums) than most people - others would find that stuffy, but it was delightful to me!

Look at the London Walks, Londonist, and Time Out websites to find activities. How about theater and museums?
As far as Harrods - sure - go take a look if you've never been there. A walking tour of Mayfair is better than just wandering around on your own.

Yes, it is, I just looked it up. Go to withlocals.com and it is called Unique Mayfair Hidden Gems Walk with Luciana. It was a 3 hour tour and she tailored it a bit for me as I wanted to walk past a couple of addresses where my great aunt had lived and my father in law's old office.
It was a really fun and interesting tour.
