Which regions in Greece are best for Greek food?

I’m planning a foodie trip to Greece and can’t wait to taste all the local specialties! Can anyone suggest the regions where the food is truly unmissable?

I ate well throughout Greece (except on Santorini); Crete stands out in my memory for some delicious meals.

The Cycladic island of Sifnos is noted for its excellent food.

We’ve been to Greece 3 years in a row. 2023, we visited Athens and Sifnos. While the food in Athens was memorable, Sifnos far exceeded it by a million miles. There’s a reason all the celebrities like Tom Hanks and wife visit it regularly. It’s a foodie heaven. But then in 2024 we went to Folegandros and Milos and had excellent meals there too. This year we went to Rhodes and Symo. The Rhodesian food is outstanding and the Symian food is optimal, especially the Symi shrimp, which we ate no less than 5 times in 4 days. So, Greek food, regional as it is, and thankfully so, is excellent no matter which island, or mainland area you visit. The choices are yours.

There are good and bad restaurants all over Greece.
Tourist traps (beside very good restaurants, however) above all at places with many tourists like Santorini, Mykonos and some parts of the walled city of Rhodos.
More seafood in the Aegean and Ionian area, more lamb etc. in areas far away from the sea.

We spent a couple of weeks on Sifnos and while we loved it, I wouldn’t say that the food was better than other places. In my opinion, for the tastiest Greek food, go for the vegetarian offerings. Or grilled fish.

I agree with Cyclades. Also northern Greece (Ioannina, Thessaloniki) they have great food too. I would say though that Crete has the best
