Fairfax VA to Maine route
We are traveling to Maine, near Bar Harbor, and will stop overnight in Worcester Mass. I have heard do NOT take I 95. Suggestions were I 81 to I 84. Is this correct? Where would i pick up 84? The next day, July 5 will be headed to Maine and am looking for the best route there as well. We'd like to stop in Ogunquit for a bit.

This route is two hours longer butshould avoid traffic. Taking rt 4 to rt 16 is our preferred route here in NH since it is scenic and passes beautiful Wagon Hill in Durham which is open to the piblic if you want an easy hike that takes you to the water. Then you see water and cross the bay, mwhen tou connect with I95 at the Portsmouth traffic circle you will be northmof the toll booth which can be a drag. You may be tempted to take RT 1 but it has to go thru Kittery ME outlet traffic somthe short drive on I95 is worth it.

Timing is everything. Traffic on 7/4 will be lighter than a normal work day.
i would take 95 if that’s the route your gps tells you is fastest.
If you want to avoid taking 95 through NYC then I’d go 95 to northern NJ, then 87/NYS Thruway to 84
If you take 95 through the city then take 91 through Hartford connecting to 84

84 has as much truck traffic as 95 and so whatever route you take there wlll be traffic. There is a route that heads NE from Worcester actually, I want to say 495 but not 100% sure. We used to take this route driving up to NH as we would take 91 to 84 which we picked up in Hartford. For a long time there was terrible congestion in Hartford because of road construction but thankfully I believe all of that work is finally finished. Yes a print map is your friend and if you are an AAA member, you can even get a TripTik which is often helpful and gives you facts about the areas you are driving through.
