Castelrotto, Compatsch or Ortisei in May 2024?

I'm planning my May 2024 holiday and am looking at spending 4-5 nights in the Alpe di Siusi area. Currently, Castelrotto, Compatsch & Ortisei are the top options. I am traveling solo and will not have a car. I am interested in relatively flat/easy day walks that do not require any special gear.
  1. Since I'll be there May 15-20, I am nervous about the weather. I can handle patches of snow but am not prepared to deal with snow everywhere. If you have visited this area in May, what was your experience with the weather?
  2. In the event that the weather turns ugly, are there other distractions nearby where I don't have to be outdoors in the cold?
  3. Can you recommend lodging?
Thank you and Happy New Year!

My wife and I spent four days in Ortisei in September2023. It was wonderful. There's good access to the Alpe di Siusi from there, even without a car. We had a rental car but took the bus instead on several occasions. Because of the car we stayed outside of the town at the Hotel Scherlin, Via Pinei 42, Ortisei, Tel 39-0471-700043. I highly recommend this hotel. They have a great breakfast and also offer a half board option. The owner's son at the front desk had excellent advice on hiking and logistics. The hotel is about five km outside of town and above it, with great views. The bus stop is right across the street and this bus route runs from the Ortisei town center, past the hotel, on to Castelrotto, and on to Siusi Seis. A different hotel in the center of Ortisei would also be good for you.

Hiking: One hike is to Seceda. For this one you take the bus to the center of town, walk 100 meters to an outdoor escalator, and take that up to a cable car station. The cable car takes you to a network of trails around the Seceda peak. The Alpe di Siusi is full of hikes and there are two ways to get there. One way is to take the bus to town again and find the cable car station on the south side of the highway (we didn't use this one). The other way is to take the bus to Siusi Seis and use the cable car there, which goes up to the Compatsh station. The hotel guy advised us to go there as the hiking was better, so we did. The altitude wasn't a problem for us, it's 2000 meters, +/- 300. There's some up and down in the hikes, though. You won't need any special gear here. The trails are well signed, there are plenty of people around, some of the trails are paved and shared with bicycles (on the Siusi meadow), some of them are rocky mountain foot paths (around Seceda).

Can't help you with the weather in May, just don't know. And who knows what May 2024 will be like anyway? At 2000 meters the altitude won't be a big snow factor but there may be some. A bigger question is whether or not the cable cars will be running. May is after the skiing season and before the tourist season. Try to find a way to check on that.

We really enjoyed our days there. The hiking should suit you perfectly. It's an outdoor destination and there's not a lot to do if the weather goes bad. (Happened to us in Cortina.) You could take the bus to Bolzano and visit the Otzi museum and shop, I guess.

Happy New Year and have fun.

May 15-20 is way too early for the higher Dolomites - hardly a cable car will be open. And - given an average winter - hiking trails above 1800 - 2000 m will still be snow covered. Ortisei will be very quiet, many hotels and restaurants closed. Just like anywhere in the higher Alps.

I would concentrate on lower regions like around Meran/Merano or the Ritten above Bozen/Bolzano.

Ingo is right. If we know your whole itinerary, we can tell you where in the Alps it's best to stop for 4 days hiking and so.....
Or what are you interested in?
