Bus travel from Mexico City to Oaxaca around day of the dead

I'm travelling to Oaxaca ahead of day of the dead and will probably take the bus as flight prices are so high. Is it necessary to book in advance? From what I've read there's generally no need to book buses in advance but not sure if this is the case at this time of year.

Probably no urgent need to book in advance. But then again, why not? You can almost always buy a voucher at an OXXO. Buying in advance gets you your choice of seat too. The right side of the bus will get you the best view on this very scenic trip. If you go during the day.

We booked a lot of our bus trips in advance, not that I was worried about getting a seat, but because on ETN we want seats 2 and 3 which are on the top floor with the bus window, or "picture window" as we like to call it. Plus I like having a paper ticket that I print out at home

I should add that the bus line will probably be ADO, and their recent policy update requires that you provide proof of being in the country legally. That is, your passport and FMM. Originals, not copies or photos. And have them handy in case the bus gets stopped in a checkpoint.

Good point, we have carried our passports on our persons this time as opposed to in a suitcase etc. and at the bus station in Mexico City were asked to show ID and our FMM card
